Its most likely your level sending unit on the side of your fuel pump. they are pretty reasonable to get from the dealer. . . under 80 bucks unless you have a bbw type engine found in only 17% of 04 jettas and if your vin is a late year manufacture date, then your pump and sender are one assembly around $530 best wishes thats not the case

Mercury Sable 1996 Fuel gauge erratic how to repair it and what piece to buy ?

i would most likely replace the sending unit in the tank, this is wat meters fuel level and transmits bak to guage. i would first tap on top of dash board wen guage acts up to see if there are any changes in its erratic action,if there is then ur problem would b a faulty guage or in that area,if not then its safe to go bak to tank area an replace sending unit... good luck

Gauge problems with fuel and oil

It is just as likely that the fuel level sending unit in the tank is bad as it is that the fuel guage in the dash is bad. The guage is MUCH easier and cheaper to change; try that first.

2004 jetta tdi wont stay running acts like running out of fuel changed fuel filter 2 weeks ago

If you aren't getting a error code from the cars computer maybe you do have low fuel pressure.

This can be checked using a fuel pressure guage. It should be done by a mechanic who knows diesel engines and VW's in particular.

Temp gauge bouncing up an down

That vehicle has two coolant temp sensors on it, both are on the passengers side of the end of the head, where the thermostat housing is. One has a two wire plug, this one tells your fans to come on the other is one single pin, this one is for your temp gauge. This sensor works off resistance, the higher the resistance the higher the gauge in the car goes. This sensor has probably grounded out and pegged your gauge in the car. Replace that sensor and you should be good to good, not too expensive either. Good luck.

Fuel guage stopped working

The fuel sending unit has gone out. This sending unit operates the fuel gauge. It is located in the gas tank. You will have to remove the tank to fix this. You can try banging on the tank, sometimes the float arm on it gets rusty and will get stuck in one position and the banging will free it up. From your description though, it sounds like the sending unit has shorted out and needs to be replaced.
Please remember to rate this fix.
