2001 nissan altima GXE After driving about 40 miles especially w/AC on the car starts to balk and wants to cut out unless I give it more gas. At stop signs it does cut out unless I put it in neutral. I have 91,300 miles on car. If I shut off A/C it runs better, however in Calif with 106 Temp that's hard to live with!

I have the same problem with my harrier 3000cc car. We have changed the idling sensor, airflow sensor. air filter, we have had the throttle checked, spark plugs, wiring and nothing works. The smell you are getting could be from your gear box, have it checked out early and if the gear shift is noticeable then you will need a gearbox specialist to open it and change the clutch plates. it is the cam position sensor...the telltale sign of the failure is that it happens when the vehicle is warm and has been driven for a while. Sensor is about 40 bucks at the auto parts store, make sure the replacement sensor is metal, not plastic.
The main symptoms of this sensor failing are rough starts, rough idling and not starting at all especially when warm.

Raise hood and have one start engine, and then engage AC Listen and see where the sound is coming from. It may the belt slipping, or AC clutch. Good Luck

possibly the wires are loose or shot mayb try and replacing them

check spark plugs

Nissan dealer for a new ECU i afraid by the sound of it,unless you can find one in the scrap yard with the chip out of the key as well

look up the codes if they are multiple missfire codes then more than likly you have a bad head gasket

Take the care to the dealer, This car is easily still under warranty and can be diagnosed and repaired for free.
