Question about 1993 Honda Prelude

My car rattles when I brake

My car rattles (especially my steering wheel) when I come to a stop. It doesn't matter how fast I was going or if I'm descending from a hill. The car shakes uncontrollably. It's a 2005 subaru impreza with low miles and it started about 3 weeks after I bought it. My brakes also make a squeaking sound as if they need to be replaced, yet when I checked them my brakes were fine and my rotors didn't seem warped.

If your tires are bald and have less than 1/8" tread, especially on the rear tires which I believe on Saab's are the drive wheels. If its your brake biasing, when its a dry road, have the car on a nice flat and straight road with little traffic around. At about 35MPH apply the brakes moderately while holding the steering wheel lightly. If the car "pulls" on the steering wheel to the left or right then there is a problem with your braking system, seek out a trusted mechanic asap

Steering/brake chatter

What you describe could be warped brake rotors or bad wheel bearings. Doesn't sound like the power steering pump.

Have you put wider tires on? Or bigger wheels ? You need to jack the front end up and have some one turn the wheel to the right and manually turn that wheel. you will see and hear the problem.

I have a noise coming from the left side front wheel are. It is a rattle - took it to a local Toyota dealership who said it was the steering RAC well that was a $1000 mistake because the noise did not...

1) Take car to non dealer shops willing to give FREE opinion

2) Not likely you have a shock in Driver Front wheel, more likely a strut. Not likely strut needs to be replaced, but strut has a STRUT MOUNT (3 bolts of which can be seen when opening your hood) below this it is connected to STRUT BEARING which below it connects to UPPER SEAT OF STRUT or SPRING INSULATOR, that if loose will rattle. Usually, shops will not tighten, because to tighten is same labor as replace the parts. (Since you already dropped $1000 on ToyotaDealer, ask them to tighten FOR FREE since rattle is still there.)

3) There is a part called a "link," connects strut to stablizer bar, that if bushings are bad will rattle.
4) If stabilizer bar bushing(s) bad, will rattle early on but eventually clunking
5) Bad ball joint or tie rod can rattle as well

Never permit any shop to do expensive work on your car w/o first getting a second opinion somewhere else first. Do not tell second shop that you are there for a second opinion.

Shaking steering wheel at highway speed, no braking
1) Bad tire in front, bad tires in front, verify inflation of tires
2) Wheel alignment may be out
3) Front suspension parts (mentioned several above)

Highway speed to suddenly braking shakes steering wheel
1) Front brake rotors need to be inspected for warping
2) Test calipers on empty road at 40 mph, going straight on very LEVEL ROAD, hit brake pedal SOMEWHAT hard while barely touching steering wheel. If car jerks to one side, instead of braking straight on, you may have a caliper, ABS, or brake fluid pressure regulator off.
3) If brake rotors are warped, may as well replace front brake pads at same moment. Use ceramic.
4) When you drive on VERY LEVEL road on highway, steering wheel must be centered, let go lightly of steering wheel. Did car stay in middle of lane? No? Get a 4-wheel alignment.

Strange vibration at the pedal when breaks lock

sounds like warped rotors, if the steering wheel also shakes then that would tell me its in the front, replace the front pads and rotors that will solve your problem.dont try resurfacing youll just have pulsating brakes again in a month or two.

I have replaced the front rotors and brake callipers, front end started to rattle again today. It's only been about a year.

does the vibration happen when you brake, through the steering,if so yes the rotors need machining,if it vibrates while you drive not braking you need a wheel balance, discs can warp quickly especially if theyve been very hot,or had water on them when theyre very hot

take it to a goodyear tire store or a other tire and brake store. midas where ever that offer free brake inspection. the bolts might be loose that holds the caliper on. don't let them fix it, just get a writen estimate. they want to find the problem so they can fix it. the dealer wants you to go away till the warrantee is out!
