Hi Luther:
The firing order is the sequence that the spark ignites fuel in the cylinders. You'll need to know what it is for your engine.
When the #1 cylinder is at Top Dead Centre on the Compression stroke, that is close to when the spark will happen. The rotor in the distributor should be pointing to the spark plug lead that goes to the #1 cylinder.
There will be a line on the crankshaft damper at the front of the engine. When that line is at 0 degrees on the timing tab, #1 piston will be at TDC (make sure the valves are closed so you know it's on the firing stroke.
To complete, spark plugs leads have to go from the distributor cap to the spark plugs, in the firing order, and in the correct direction of rotation.
Please reply as a comment on this post if you have any more questions.
cheers.

Changed distributor cap and now van wont start did not have firing order . we now have correct firing order. van was possibly flooded from checking firing order. now carborator is smoking and engine wont...

I would pull the plugs and let the gas into the cylinders to dry out , you may have a hydrolock engine after putting so much gas into it , recheck the firing order to be sure is OK ususlly when you see a carb backfiring and smoking the firing order is not right

Firing order

If it's a 3.1 or 3.4, firing order is 1-2-3-4-5-6

If it's a 3.8, firing order is 1-6-5-4-3-2.

On a 3.1 the rotation is Clockwise.

All the best.
