Change the speed sensor if you have the electronic speedometer. If you have a cable driven speedometer, buy a new cable, and replace the old cable if it has been broken.

Odometer speedometer display not working

Hi Dennis,I am not sure if your vehicle has a cable driven speedometer or it is electronic.I would first inspect the driven gear/transducer at the transmission. Sometimes acid from battery leakage can corrode terminals at the transducer.

You have a speed sensor in the side of the transmission that may have failed. Normally you would have a check engine light on with a trouble code for it too.
The sensor would need to be tested.

My speedometer stoped workin evrything else works how do i fix it

Can you tell if it is cable driven from transmission? Probably not. Electronically driven from either crankshaft, dist or flywheel. Sensor somewhere tells speedometer or computer. Please get a repair manual from autoparts store, Good Luck!

if this is a cable driven and not an electronic then the cable may have snapped or the plastic gear may have stripped ,either way you have to pull out the instrument panel and remove the cable then pull it through the firewall and unhook from the transmission and replace it.

You need to find out if your speedometer is cable driven or electronic. If it is cable driven there will be a cable running from your transmission to the back of the speedometer. Sometimes the cables lose their lubrication and break. Usually pretty cheap to replace.

If your speedometer is electronic there is a sensor on your transmission that sends a signal to your speedometer. Either your sensor (called a Vehicle Speed Sensor or VSS) went bad or your speedometer quit working. The sensors are usually inexpensive....the speedometers are NOT! Last one I needed I bought off eBay and purchased one with the lowest miles I could find. If you ever sell the car you have to mark the title that the speedometer is not correct. I usually keep the old speedometer around along with a record of the mileage of the replacement so I can always figure out the cars true mileage if I need to.
