The code PO742 indicates the torque converter clutch is stuck on.
The torque converter is what connects the engine to the transmission.
It engages and disengages according to signals from the pcm, to aid in
smooth shifting. There are a couple of things you can try. make sure trans. fluid is full, if thats ok check the 20 pin connector, located on left
side of car on top of transmission bell housing. Make sure there's no
corrosion or bent pins. If this clears the code your all set, if not you may
want to ask your mechanic and see what he/she recomends.
Hope this helps.
Good luck

Sounds like a ignition coil has gone bad. Buy one and try it in place of each of the three and test drive each time until you've found which one was bad. Recently worked on a 1998 Passat 1.8T with this problem, #2 was bad so swapped it with #4 and found it ran much much worse in that position and computer confirmed (via code scanner) that cylinder 4 was now misfiring instead of the previous cylinder 2 misfire. Those are a bit different, one coil per cylinder (4) whereas your Buick engine has 3, each firing two spark plugs at the same time. If you suspect bad plug wires, run the car at night and look for arching (blue or white) from plug wires to ground, accompanied by a popping sound. Also check your plugs to see if they are in good condition.
WITH A FLASH LIGHT, check out your valcuum lines, exspecialy the one going to the fuel pressure regulator! The hoses may not be connected, have holes in them, or dry rooted. If you pull it and it break, replace.
