If your steering is easier above idle the problem is the pump.

sounds like the power steering pump is the problem. check the drive belt for proper tension and if that looks fine - then replace the pump.
the reason it only works when you step on the gas is because the pump is moving faster then at idle. which is why I think it could just be a loose belt. but again - if the belt looks good and tight, then the pump is bad and needs replacing.

Power steering fluid leak somewhere behind right front tire, but can't locate the source.

Add power steering fluid, have some one start engine, and turn wheel as far as it will go, that will put pressure on power steering pump, now you can look for the leak, while it's under pressure, good luck.Hope this was very helpful.

1999 Silverado K1500. No Power Steering

While the engine is running look in the reservoir and see if the fluid is flowing. If you can`t tell then remove the belt and pull out on the pulley. What will happen on some of these is the pump steering shaft will sheer off.It will still stay in place but it is not turning anything.Hope this helps.Good luck.

No power steering when engine is on.

Is there a large puddle under your vehicle? Your car's power steering is powered by power steering fluid and the belt turning this pump. So either you ran out of fluid due to a slow leak, the belt is not turning the pump, or you have a large leak and you lost all of your fluid at one time. It would be a good start by checking the power steering fluid, and the belt.

check your power steering fluid level
check the power steering belt tension
check the hosesto see if they are restricting the flow of power steering fluid
try bleeding the systek to see if there is any air in the system
try changing the power steering fluid as it may not be the rite fluid for your car
perhaps you have a defective power steering pump or the seals in it are going
