A/c adjustment to loosen/tighten a/c belt

Is there a bolt to adjust the tension on the a/c pump? Where is it? The only one I can find isn't slotted for tension - just one mounting bolt?

ADJUSTMENT

Excessive belt tension will cause damage to the alternator and water pump pulley bearings, while, on the other hand, loose belt tension will produce slip and premature wear on the belt. Therefore, be sure to adjust the belt tension to the proper level.
To adjust the tension on a drive belt, loosen the adjusting bolt or fixing bolt locknut on the alternator, alternator bracket or tension pulley. Then move the alternator or turn the adjusting bolt to adjust belt tension. Once the desired value is reached, secure the bolt or locknut and recheck tension.


REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

1.5L, 1.6L, 1.8L, 2.0L and 2.4L Engines

  1. Loosen the alternator support nut.
  2. Loosen the adjuster lock bolt.
  3. Rotate the adjuster bolt counter clockwise to release the tension on the belt.
  4. Remove the belt.

To install:
  1. Install the belt on the pulleys.
  2. Rotate the adjuster bolt clockwise until the proper tension is reached.
  3. Tighten the adjuster lock bolt and the alternator support nut.

  1. Remove the alternator belt as described above.
  2. Loosen the power steering pump adjusting bolts.
  3. Remove the power steering pump fixed bolt on the rear of the bracket.
  4. Rotate the pump toward the engine and remove the belt.

To install:
  1. Install the belt on the pulleys.
  2. Rotate the pump until the proper tension is reached.
  3. Tighten the adjusting bolts on the pump.
  4. Tighten the fixed bolt on the rear of the bracket.
  5. Install the alternator belt.

  1. Loosen the tension pulley and remove the belt.
  2. The installation is the reverse of the removal.

ALTERNATOR AND A/C COMPRESSOR

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.


CAUTION Wait at least 90 seconds after the negative battery cable is disconnected to prevent possible deployment of the air bag.
  1. Raise and safely support the vehicle and remove the front undercover.
  2. Loosen the tension pulley fixing nut and relieve the tension on the belt by turning the adjusting bolt.
  3. Remove the belt.

To install:
  1. Install the belt on the crankshaft and alternator pulleys.
  2. Using the adjusting bolt on the tensioner, tighten the belt to the desired tension.
  3. Tighten the fixing nut to hold the adjustment.
  4. Install the undercover and lower the vehicle to the floor.
  5. Connect the negative battery cable.

POWER STEERING BELT
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.


CAUTION Wait at least 90 seconds after the negative battery cable is disconnected to prevent possible deployment of the air bag.
  1. Raise and safely support the vehicle and remove the undercover.
  2. Remove the alternator and A/C compressor belt.
  3. Lower the vehicle and remove the cruise control pump link assembly.
  4. Place the power steering hose under the oil reservoir.
  5. Loosen the tension pulley fixing bolts and remove the power steering pump drive belt.

To install:
  1. Install the power steering pump drive belt.
  2. Insert an extension bar or equivalent into the opening at the end of the tension pulley bracket and pivot the pulley to apply tension to the belt.
  3. Tighten the fixing bolts.
  4. Raise the vehicle and install the alternator and A/C compressor belt.
  5. Install the undercover and lower the vehicle.
  6. Connect the negative battery cable.

3.0L SOHC Diamante
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Loosen the lockbolt on the face of the A/C tensioner pulley.
  3. Turn the adjusting bolt of the A/C tensioner pulley to loosen the tension of the A/C belt.
  4. Remove the A/C compressor belt.
  5. Loosen the locknut on the face of the power steering/alternator tensioner pulley.
  6. Turn the adjusting bolt of the tensioner pulley to loosen the tension of the belt.
  7. Remove the power steering/alternator belt.

To install:
  1. Install the power steering/alternator belt first and then the A/C compressor drive belt.
  2. Adjust the belts to the proper tension by turning the adjusting bolts and tighten pulley fixing nut/bolt.
  3. Tighten the mounting nut of the power steering/alternator tensioner pulley to 36 ft. lbs. (50 Nm).

Check the condition and tension of all drive belts every 12,000 miles, or at least once a year. Loose drive belts can lead to poor engine cooling and diminished alternator, power steering pump, air conditioning compressor, or emission air pump output. A belt that is too tight places a strain on the bearings in the driven component.

Replace any drive belt that is glazed, worn, cracked, or stretched to the point where correct adjustment tension is impossible. If two belts are used to drive a component, always replace both belts when replacement is necessary. After installing a new belt, run the engine for ten minutes, shut OFF the engine and recheck the belt tension. Readjust if necessary.

Two popular methods of checking drive belt adjustment are; the Belt Tension Gauge Method and the Belt Deflection Method. The former requires a special gauge and the latter requires a straight edge and scale or just a good eye for measurement. The deflection method will be used in the following belt replacement instructions. A rule of thumb for checking belt tension by the deflection method is to determine the midpoint between two pulleys of the drive belt and press down at that point with moderate thumb pressure. The belt should deflect to the measurement indicated in the following installation procedures. Adjustment is necessary if the belt is either too loose or too tight.

WARNING A belt adjustment which is either too loose or too tight will eventually damage the accessory that belt is driving. A too loose adjustment allows free-play in the belt which could transfer a whipping motion or shock to the accessory drive pulley. Similarly, a belt which is too tight will preload the accessory bearings, leading to early failure.

Raise the front of the vehicle, support on jackstands and remove the lower splash shield if access is hampered due to space limitations when changing drive belts.

  1. Loosen the idler pulley bracket pivot screw and the locking screw.
  2. Remove the belt and install a replacement.
  3. Using a breaker bar and socket apply torque to the welded nut provided on the mounted bracket to obtain proper tension.
  4. Tighten the locking screw first, followed by pivot screw. Tighten to 40 ft. lbs. (55 Nm).

  1. Loosen the pivot nut, locking screw, and the adjusting screw.
  2. Remove the belt and install a replacement.
  3. Adjust to specification by tightening the adjusting screw.
  4. Tighten the locking screw to 25 ft. lbs. (34 Nm).
  5. Tighten the pivot nut to 30 ft. lbs. (41 Nm).

ALTERNATOR DRIVE BELT (BOSCH TYPE)
If removal of the alternator belt is required, the A/C belt must first be removed.
  1. Loosen the pivot nut, locking nut, and adjusting screw.
  2. Remove the belt and install a replacement.
  3. Adjust to specification by tightening the adjusting screw.
  4. Tighten the locking nut to 25 ft. lbs. (34 Nm).
  5. Tighten the pivot nut to 30 ft. lbs. (41 Nm).

POWER STEERING BELT
If removal of the power steering belt is required, the A/C and alternator belts must first be removed.
  1. Loosen the locking screw, and pivot screw.
  2. Remove the belt and install a replacement.
  3. Install a 1 / 2 in. breaker bar into the pump bracket slot, apply pressure with the breaker bar and adjust the belt to specification.
  4. Tighten the locking screw first, then the pivot screw. Tighten to 40 ft. lbs. (55 Nm).

AIR PUMP DRIVE BELT

When servicing the air pump, use the square holes provided in the pulley to prevent camshaft rotation.

  1. Remove the nuts and bolts retaining the drive pulley cover.
  2. Remove the locking bolt and pivot bolt from the pump bracket, then remove the pump.
  3. Remove the belt and install a replacement.
  4. Position the pump, then install the locking bolt and pivot bolt finger-tight.
  5. Install a 1 / 2 in. breaker bar into the bracket assembly (block the drive pulley to prevent camshaft rotation), and adjust the belt to specification.
  6. Tighten locking bolt and pivot bolt to 25 ft. lbs. (35 Nm).

  5. Tighten the locking screw, followed by the pivot screw. Tighten to 40 ft. lbs. (55 Nm).
  6. Install the timing pick-up, and tighten to 160 inch lbs. (18 Nm).

All Models
Belt tension is very important, as a belt that is too tight will put too much stress on the bearings of the components it drives, causing them to wear out prematurely. A belt that is too loose will slip, causing (1) the belt to wear out quickly due to friction heat, and (2) inefficient alternator, air pump, cooling fan or air conditioner operation because much of the turning power supplied by the main drive pulley is lost.
The belts should be inspected and/or adjusted at 2,000 miles (3,221 km) and then every 4,000 miles (6,441 km). First, make sure that the belt is properly positioned in the pulley. Check the pulleys for damage. Inspect the belts for cracks and signs of fraying. These usually develop on the inner surface and extend into the backing or outer surface of the belt. Check also for glazing, a completely smooth appearance which indicates slippage. A belt that is in good shape will have a slightly grainy appearance like cloth. Replace belts that show cracks or glazing.
Check belt tension. Apply pressure with your thumb at the mid-point between two pulleys, and the belt should stretch or deflect about 1 / 4 - 1 / 2 in. (6-13mm). If the belt is too tight or too loose, adjust/replace as necessary.


ADJUSTING

Except RX-7

To adjust belts, first locate the mounting bolt on the air pump or alternator (each has its own belt and adjusts to permit that belt to be tensioned correctly). This bolt attaches the unit to the engine and has a nut on the end. Put a wrench on either end and loosen the bolt until there is practically no tension on it. Then, loosen the adjusting bolt, which is located on the opposite side of the unit and which passes through a slot. Pull the alternator or air pump away from the engine and tighten the adjusting bolt just enough to hold the unit while you check tension. Repeat the adjustment procedure until the belt deflects the proper amount, then fully tighten the adjusting and mounting bolts. Avoid too much belt tension or overtightening of bolts. A new belt should be tensioned just slightly more (about 0.4 in. or 10mm deflection) and checked after several hundred miles of operation to make sure that tension is still adequate. (Tension is lost very rapidly until a new belt is broken in.)

Late model GLCs, 323s, 626s, MX-6s and 929s may use an adjusting bolt on either the idler pulley (a pulley which is not directly associated with any of the accessories) or on the power steering pump itself. This bolt makes adjustment much easier because you don't have to hold the accessory under a great deal of tension while tightening the mounting bolts.
On models where the idler pulley has a locknut at its center, simply loosen the locknut, then turn the adjusting bolt clockwise to increase belt tension or counterclockwise to decrease it or remove the belt. Do not forget to retighten the locknut when tension is correct, or vibration may cause it to fall off. Recheck the tension with the locknut tightened and readjust if necessary.
To adjust the power steering pump pulley on the GLC, loosen the slotted adjusting bar bolt, the mounting bolt across from it, and the locknut at the bottom of the adjusting bolt. Turn the adjusting bolt counterclockwise to remove the belt or reduce tension, and clockwise to increase it. When tension is correct, tighten the adjusting bolt locknut, adjusting bar bolt, and pump mounting bolt.
On 626, MX-6 and 929 models with a 4-ridge or 5-ridge ribbed type V-belt driving both the air conditioner and power steering pump, belt tension is much greater. With a used belt, deflection should only be about 1 / 4 in. (6.35mm).
RX-7

The RX-7 may be equipped with as many as three or four separate drive belts. The belts are arranged at the front of the engine and drive the cooling fan/water pump, alternator, power steering pump, emission control air pump and air conditioner compressor (if so equipped).

Check the tension of each belt at the arrows numbered 1, 2, 3 and 4 (depending on year) shown in the illustration. Press on the belt with your thumb using moderate pressure (about 22 lbs.). The belts should give or deflect the amounts shown in the chart.

Use the following appropriate procedure and illustration to make drive belt adjustment(s).
ALTERNATOR AND AIR PUMP

  1. Slightly loosen the stationary pivot bolt on the alternator or air pump.
  2. Loosen the adjusting bolt.
  3. Using a piece of wood (tool handle, etc.) as a prybar, move the alternator or air pump outward or inward until the proper deflection is obtained.

When prying on the alternator or air pump, make sure the prybar is anchored against the engine case and not against a component (distributor cap, etc.) which could break.

  1. Tighten the adjusting bolt. Remove the prybar and tighten the pivot bolt.

AIR CONDITIONING COMPRESSOR AND POWER STEERING PUMP

  1. Loosen the locknut on the idler pulley, if so equipped.
  2. Turn the adjusting bolt until the proper tension is reached.

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

All Models

  1. Loosen the accessory being driven and move it on its pivot point to free the belt.
  2. Remove the belt. If an idler pulley is used, it is often only necessary to loosen the idler pulley to provide enough slack to remove the belt.

To install:
  1. After the new belt is in place and properly tensioned, start the engine and allow it to run for about five minutes to seat the new belt.
  2. Stop the engine and recheck the belt tension. Adjust as necessary.

On engines with many driven accessories, other belts may have to be removed to access the one being replaced.

INSPECTION

Inspect the belts for signs of glazing or cracking. A glazed belt will be perfectly smooth from slippage, while a good belt will have a slight texture of fabric visible. Cracks will usually start at the inner edge of the belt and run outward. All worn or damaged drive belts should be replaced immediately. It is always best to replace all drive belts at one time, as a preventive maintenance measure, during this service operation.


CHECKING TENSION AND ADJUSTMENT

The belt tension on most driven components is adjusted by moving the component (alternator, power steering pump etc.) within the range of a slotted bracket. Some brackets (toothed) use a rack and pinion mechanism which moves the alternator side-to-side to adjust the belt tension. With this configuration, no prying tools are required. On Quantum (except 5 cylinder) and Fox models, the air conditioner compressor drive belts are adjusted by varying the number of discs (shims) between the halves of the crankshaft pulley. Before adjusting the belt tension on any engine, look at the mounting and determine what kind of bracket is used.
To check belt tension, push in on the drive belt about midway between the crankshaft pulley and the driven component. If the belt is less than 39.4 in. (1m) long, it should deflect between 0.80-0.120 in. (2-5mm). For longer belts, it should deflect between 0.40-0.060 in. (10-15mm). Belt size is usually printed on the back side of the belt. If it can't be read, it's probably time to replace it.

  1. Loosen the adjustment nut/bolt in the slotted bracket. Slightly loosen the pivot bolt.
  2. Pull (don't pry) the component outward to increase tension. Push inward to reduce tension. Tighten the adjusting nut/bolt and the pivot bolt.

  1. Components, such as the power steering pump and some air conditioner compressors, may be mounted with a double slotted adjusting bracket using a threaded bolt and locknut to adjust and maintain tension. Loosen the locknut(s) and slightly loosen the bolt(s) in the slotted groove(s). Turn the threaded adjustment bolt(s) in or out to gain correct tension. Tighten locknut(s) and slotted bracket bolt(s).
  2. Recheck the drive belt tension, readjust if necessary.

Toothed Brackets

  1. Loosen the tension bolt and the alternator pivot bolt. These bolts should be loosened until the alternator swings freely under its own weight.

  1. Adjust the V-belt by turning the nut on the tension bolt while checking the belt deflection with your thumb.
  2. Once the proper tension is achieved, tighten the tension bolt to 26 ft. lbs. (35 Nm). Tighten the pivot bolt to 15 ft. lbs. (20 Nm).
  3. Recheck the drive belt tension, readjust if necessary.

Split Pulley
See Figure 7
On Quantum (except 5 cylinder) and Fox models, the air conditioner compressor drive belts are adjusted by varying the number of discs (shims) between the halves of the crankshaft pulley.

  1. Remove the nuts/bolts securing the tensioner plate and crankshaft pulley halves.
  2. Add or remove the amount of spacer discs between the pulley halves until the belt tension is correct.

If there are any shims left over, do not throw them away. On Fox and turbo diesel Quantum models, store the extra shims in front of the split pulley (behind the tensioner plate). On Quantums with 4 cylinder gas engines, store the extra shims behind the split pulley (in front of the crankshaft hub).

  1. Secure the pulley halves. Torque the pulley nuts or bolts to 15 ft. lbs. (20 Nm).


REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

If a belt must be replaced, the driven unit must be loosened and moved to its extreme loosest position (usually by moving it toward the center of the motor). After removing the old belt, check the pulleys for dirt or built-up material which could affect belt contact. Carefully install the new belt, it may appear to be just a little too small to fit over the pulley flanges. Fit the belt over the largest pulley (usually the crankshaft pulley at the bottom center of the motor) first, then work on the smaller one(s). Gentle pressure in the direction of rotation is helpful. Some belts run around a third or idler pulley, which acts as an additional pivot in the belt's path. It may be possible to loosen the idler pulley as well as the main component, making your job much easier. Depending on which belt(s) you are changing, it may be necessary to loosen or remove other interfering belts to get at the one(s) you want. Some models have a front engine mount installed through the air conditioner compressor belt circle. Support the engine and remove the mount prior to belt removal and installation.
When buying replacement belts, remember that the fit is critical according to the length of the belt, the width of the belt, the depth of the belt and the angle or profile of the V shape (always match up old belt with new belt if possible). The belt shape should exactly match the shape of the pulley; belts that are not an exact match can cause noise, slippage and premature failure.
After the new belt is installed, adjust it for proper tension. This is sometimes a three or four-handed job; you may find an assistant helpful. Make sure that all the bolts you loosened are retightened and that any other loosened belts also have the correct tension. A new belt can be expected to stretch a bit after installation so be prepared to re-adjust your new belt.
After installing a new belt, run the engine for about 5 minutes and then recheck the belt tension.

I NEED A DIAGRAM ON HOW TO INSTALL A NEW ALTERNATOR BELT ON A 1982 TOYOTA CELICA GT WITH A/C.


Hi, it appears there are other belts in front of the alternator belt. In this case, the other belts have to come off first. There are adjusting mechanisms on each the air pump, compressor, and alternator to loosen and tighten the belts. The power steering belt is adjusted by sliding the idler pulley. Please follow the instructions below and let me know if you have any questions.

Alternator

To adjust the tension of the alternator drive belt on all models, loosen the pivot and mounting bolts on the alternator. Using a wooden hammer handle, a broomstick or your hand, move the alternator one way or the other until the proper tension is achieved.

WARNING Do not use a screwdriver or any other metal device (such as a prybar) as a lever.
Tighten the mounting bolts securely. If a new belt has been installed, recheck the tension after about 200 miles (480 km) of driving.

Air Conditioning Compressor

A/C compressor belt tension can be adjusted by turning the tension adjusting bolt which is located on the compressor tensioner bracket. Turn the bolt clockwise to tighten the belt and counterclockwise to loosen it.

Air Pump

See Figures 12
To adjust the tension of the air pump drive belt, loosen the adjusting lever bolt and the pivot bolt. Move the pump in or out until the desired tension is felt.
The tension should be checked between the air pump and the crankshaft pulley on cars without air conditioning. On cars with A/C, the tension should be checked between the A/C compressor and the crankshaft pulley.

Power Steering Pump

Tension on the power steering belt is adjusted by means of an idler pulley. Turn the adjusting bolt on the idler pulley until the desired tension is felt and then retighten the lockbolt.

I'm trying to change the belts for my 92 tercel but some how cant find the tension pulley. Can anyone please help me. I need to change both belts.


It appears that your car is equipped with multiple v-belts, rather than a serpentine belt so there most likely aren't tensioner pullies. Here is some general info that may help.

Alternator To adjust the tension of the alternator drive belt on older models, loosen the pivot and mounting bolts on the alternator. Using a wooden hammer handle, or a broomstick as a prying device, move the alternator one way or the other until the proper tension is achieved. Do not use a screwdriver or any other metal device such as a pry bar, as a lever. Newer models use a tension adjusting bolt. Loosen the pivot bolt and the locking bolt, then turn the tension adjusting bolt until proper tension is achieved. Tighten the bolts securely, run the engine about minute, stop the engine then recheck the belt tension. Air Conditioning Compressor A/C compressor (always use caution when working near the A/C compressor to avoid damaging the refrigerant lines) belt tension can be adjusted by turning the tension adjusting bolt which is located on the compressor tensioner bracket. Turn the bolt clockwise to tighten the belt and counterclockwise to loosen it. Air Pump To adjust the tension of the air pump drive belt, loosen the adjusting lever bolt and the pivot bolt. Move the pump in or out until the desired tension is reached. NOTE: The tension should be checked between the air pump and the crankshaft pulley on cars without air conditioning. On cars with A/C the tension should be checked between the compressor and the crankshaft pulley. Power Steering Pump Tension on the power steering belt is adjusted by means of an idler pulley (some models may use just a lower adjusting bracket setup, similar to the alternator adjustment service procedure). Loosen the lock bolt and turn the adjusting bolt on the idler pulley until the desired tension is felt, then tighten the lock bolt.

Belt routing


V-BELT ADJUSTMENT CAUTION
On models equipped with an electric cooling fan, disconnect the negative battery cable or fan motor wiring harness connector before replacing or adjusting drive belts. The fan may come on, under certain circumstances, even though the ignition is OFF. Alternator Drive Belt
  1. Position a ruler perpendicular to the drive belt at its longest run. Test the tightness of the belt by pressing it firmly with your thumb. The deflection should not exceed 1?4 in. (6mm).
  2. If the deflection exceeds 1?4 in. (6mm), loosen the alternator mounting and adjusting arm bolts.
  3. On 1968-72 V8 and 6 cylinder models, use a prytool to move the alternator toward or away from the engine until the proper tension is reached. NOTE: Apply tension to the front of the alternator only. Positioning the prytool against the rear end housing will damage the alternator.
  4. On 1973 and later V8 models, place a 1 in. (25.4mm) open-end or equivalent wrench on the adjusting arm bolt and pull on the wrench until the proper tension is achieved.
  5. Holding the alternator in place, tighten the adjusting arm bolt. Inspect the belt tension. When the belt is properly tensioned, tighten the alternator mounting bolt. Fig. 1: Alternator belt adjustment 86651054.gif
Power Steering Drive Belt ALL 6-CYLINDER AND 1971-72 V8 MODELS
  1. Holding a ruler perpendicular to the drive belt at its longest run, test the tightness of the belt by pressing it firmly with your thumb. The deflection should not exceed 1?4 in. (6mm).
  2. To adjust the belt tension, loosen the adjusting and mounting bolts on the front face of the steering pump cover plate (hub side).
  3. Using a prytool on the pump hub, move the power steering pump toward or away from the engine until the proper tension is reached. Do not pry against the reservoir as it is relatively soft and easily deformed.
  4. Hold the pump in place, tighten the adjusting arm bolt and then inspect the belt tension. When the belt is properly tensioned tighten the mounting bolts.
1973 AND LATER V8 MODELS
  1. Position a ruler perpendicular to the drive belt at its longest run. Test the tightness of the belt by pressing it firmly with your thumb. The deflection should be about 1?4 in. (6mm).
  2. To adjust the belt tension, loosen the three bolts in the three elongated adjusting slots at the power steering pump attaching bracket.
  3. Turn the steering pump drive belt adjusting nut as required until the proper deflection is obtained. Turning the adjusting nut clockwise will increase tension and decrease deflection; counterclockwise will decrease tension and increase deflection.

Air Conditioning Compressor Drive Belt
  1. Position a ruler perpendicular to the drive belt at its longest run. Test the tightness of the belt by pressing it firmly with your thumb. The deflection should not exceed 1?4 in. (6mm).
  2. If the engine is equipped with an idler pulley, loosen the idler pulley adjusting boot, insert a prytool between the pulley and the engine (or in the idler pulley adjusting slot), and adjust the tension accordingly. If the engine is not equipped with an idler pulley, the alternator must be moved to adjust, as outlined under Alternator Drive Belt.

Thermactor® Air Pump Drive Belt
  1. Position a ruler perpendicular to the drive belt at its longest run. Test the tightness of the belt by pressing it firmly with your thumb. The deflection should be about 1?4 in. (6mm).
  2. To adjust the belt tension, loosen the adjusting arm bolt slightly. If necessary, also loosen the mounting belt slightly.
  3. Using a prytool, pry against the pump rear cover to move the pump toward or away from the engine as necessary. WARNING
    Do not pry against the pump housing itself, as damage to the housing may result.

ADJUSTMENT 1.8L Engines ALTERNATOR AND WATER PUMP BELT
  1. Loosen the alternator adjusting bolt.
  2. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  3. Loosen the alternator mounting bolt. NOTE: Do not pry against the stator frame. Position the prybar against a stronger point, such as the area around a case bolt. Fig. 1: A belt tension gauge should be placed on the longest span of the belt to check tension — 1.8L engine 90981g05.gif

  4. Position a suitable belt tension gauge on the longest accessible span of belt and tighten the belt.
  5. Adjust the tension to 86–103 lbs. (383–461 N) for a new belt or 68–86 lbs. (304–383 kg) for a used belt.
  6. If a belt tension gauge is not available, adjust the tension to 0.31–0.35 in. (8–9mm) deflection for a new belt or 0.35–0.39 in. (9–10mm) deflection for a used belt.
  7. Tighten the alternator adjusting bolt to 14–19 ft. lbs. (19–25 Nm).
  8. Tighten the alternator mounting bolt to 27–38 ft. lbs. (37–52 Nm).

POWER STEERING PUMP BELT
  1. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  2. Loosen the power steering pump mounting bolt and nuts.

  4. Tighten the power steering pump mounting nut near the pump adjusting bolt.
  5. Position a suitable belt tension gauge on the longest accessible span of belt and tighten the belt.
  6. Adjust the tension to 110–132 lbs. (491–589 N) for a new belt or 95–110 lbs. (422–491 N) for a used belt.
  7. Check for proper belt deflection. For a new belt (one with less than 10 minutes of run time), the deflection should be 0.31–0.35 in. (8–9mm). For a used belt (one with more than 10 minutes of run time), the deflection should be 0.35–0.39 in. (9–10mm).
  8. Tighten the power steering pump mounting nut, located near the adjusting bolt, to 27–38 ft. lbs. (37–52 Nm).
  9. Tighten the pump mounting bolt behind the pulley to 27–40 ft. lbs. (36–54 Nm), and the remaining pump mounting nut to 23–34 ft. lbs. (31–46 Nm).

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Turn the crankshaft to align the timing belt matchmarks and set cylinder No. 1 to Top Dead Center (TDC) on the compression stroke. Once in this position, the engine must NOT be turned or disturbed.
  3. Remove all necessary components to gain access to the cylinder head and timing belt covers.
  4. Remove the cylinder head and timing belt covers.
  5. There are 2 belts in this system; the one running to the camshaft pulley is the timing belt. The other, shorter one drives the balance shafts and is referred to as the balancer belt or timing balancer belt. Lock the timing belt adjuster in position by installing one of the lower timing belt cover bolts to the adjuster arm.
  6. Loosen the timing belt and balancer shafts tensioner adjuster nut, but do not loosen the nut more than 1 turn. Push the tensioner for the balancer belt away from the belt to relieve the tension. Hold the tensioner and tighten the adjusting nut to hold the tensioner in place.
  7. Carefully remove the balancer belt. Do not crimp or bend the belt; protect it from contact with oil or coolant. Slide the belt off the pulleys.
  8. Remove the balancer belt drive sprocket from the crankshaft.
  9. Loosen the lockbolt installed to the timing belt adjuster and loosen the adjusting nut. Push the timing belt adjuster to remove the tension on the timing belt, then tighten the adjuster nut.
  10. Remove the timing belt. Do not crimp or bend the belt; protect it from contact with oil or coolant. Slide the belt off the pulleys.
  11. If defective, remove the belt tensioners by performing the following:
    1. Remove the springs from the balancer belt and the timing belt tensioners.
    2. Remove the adjusting nut.
    3. Remove the bolt from the balancer belt adjuster lever, then remove the lever and the tensioner pulley.
    4. Remove the lockbolt from the timing belt tensioner lever, then remove the tensioner pulley and lever from the engine.
  12. This is an excellent time to check or replace the water pump. Even if the timing belt is only being replaced as part of a good maintenance schedule, consider replacing the pump at the same time. To install:
  13. If the water pump is to be replaced, install a new O-ring and make certain it is properly seated. Install the water pump and retaining bolts. Tighten the mounting bolts to 106 inch lbs. (12 Nm).
  14. If the tensioners were removed, perform the following to install them:
    1. Install the timing belt tensioner lever and tensioner pulley. NOTE: The tensioner lever must be properly positioned on its pivot pin located on the oil pump. Be sure that the timing belt lever and tensioner moves freely and does not bind.
    2. Install the lockbolt to the timing belt tensioner, do not tighten the lockbolt at this time.
    3. Install the balancer belt pulley and adjuster lever.
    4. Install the adjusting nut and the bolt to the balancer belt adjuster lever. Do not tighten the adjuster nut or bolt at this time. NOTE: Be sure that the balancer lever and tensioner moves freely and does not bind.
    5. Install the springs to the tensioners.
    6. Move the timing belt tensioner its full deflection and tighten the lockbolt.
    7. Move the balancer its full deflection and tighten the adjusting nut.
  15. The crankshaft timing pointer must be perfectly aligned with the white mark on the flywheel or flex-plate; the camshaft pulley must be aligned so that the word UP is at the top of the pulley and the marks on the edge of the pulley are aligned with the surfaces of the head.
  16. Install the timing belt over the pulleys and tensioners.
  17. Loosen the bolt used to lock the timing belt tensioner. Loosen, then tighten the timing belt adjusting nut.
  18. Turn the crankshaft counterclockwise until the cam pulley has moved 3 teeth; this creates tension on the timing belt. Loosen, then tighten the adjusting nut and tighten it to 33 ft. lbs. (45 Nm). Tighten the bolt used to lock the timing belt tensioner.
  19. Realign the timing belt marks, then install the balancer belt drive sprocket on the crankshaft.
  20. Align the front balancer pulley; the face of the front timing balancer pulley has a mark, which must be aligned with the notch on the oil pump body. This pulley is the one at 10 o'clock to the crank pulley when viewed from the pulley end.
  21. Align the rear timing balancer pulley (2 o'clock from the crank pulley) using a 6 x 100mm bolt or rod. Mark the bolt or rod at a point 2.9 in. (74mm) from the end. Remove the bolt from the maintenance hole on the side of the block; insert the bolt or rod into the hole. Align the 2.9 in. (74mm) mark with the face of the hole. This pin will hold the shaft in place during installation.
  22. Install the balancer belt. Once the belts are in place, be sure that all the engine alignment marks are still correct. If not, remove the belts, realign the engine and reinstall the belts. Once the belts are properly installed, slowly loosen the adjusting nut, allowing the tensioner to move against the belt. Remove the pin from the maintenance hole and reinstall the bolt and washer.
  23. Turn the crankshaft 1 full turn, then tighten the adjuster nut to 33 ft. lbs. (45 Nm). Remove the bolt used to lock the timing belt tensioner.
  24. Install the lower cover, ensuring the rubber seals are in place. Install a new seal around the adjusting nut, DO NOT loosen the adjusting nut.
  25. Install the key on the crankshaft and install the crankshaft pulley. Apply oil to the bolt threads and tighten it to 181 ft. lbs. (250 Nm).
  26. Install the upper timing belt cover and all applicable components. When installing the side engine mount, tighten the bolt and nut attaching the mount to the engine to 40 ft. lbs. (55 Nm) and the through-bolt and nut to 47 ft. lbs. (65 Nm).
  27. Connect the negative battery cable.

I can not tighten the alternator belt on my hyundai 2001 300 xg


If it doesn't have an automatic belt tensioner there will be an adjustment screw on either the alternator or power steering pump (possibly both if there are two belts). Loosen the two mounting bolts securing the accessory (ie: alt or p/s pump) and tighten the screw. Once adequate tension is on the belt tighten the mounting bolts.

Sometimes the adjustment is on a seperate pulley and not one of the accessories. If this is the case, loosen the center bolt on the pulley and tighten the adjustment screw. Once tight, tighten the center bolt.

If you have an automatic tensioner there are no adjustments to make the belt tighter.
