The crank sensor is located below the front exhaust manifold and above the starter. To access it, you must lift the front of the vehicle, and remove the starter. Once the starter is removed the sensor is visible. Because of the poor location and poor GM engineering these sensors fail. You have excessive heat from the exhaust and oil leaking from the valve covers that short them out. Also once the sensor is replaced, it must undergo a re-learn process. Unfortunately this process can only be performed by a GM dealer via their computer system.....if you need further assistance, feel free to post them on FYa...hopefully this helps!!
Hello suewagner. The crank sensor is mounted above the starter motor on the firewall side of the engine. The sensor picks up the signal direct off of the crankshaft through a machined hole in the engine block. I have removed them without dropping the starter but learned that in most cases it is easier to drop the starter down to access it. Here is a diagram for you.
thats touchy if the engines are the same size yes but make sure you swap all the sensors over to the other motor. the GM dealership said that when i put a 2.8 from an 88 beretta into a 93 grand prix that had a 3.1 that it wouldnt work well i did it anyways and had to change a few mounting brackets and the sensors then i took it up to GM dealer to rub it in there face lol
