1996 chevy blazer housing between transmission and transfer case cracked are there seals on the rear of the transmission and front of the transfer case in the housing?

No. The out-put shaft on the tranny goes straight through and there are no seals except for the transfer case out-put shaft. There is only a gasket that seals the two cases.

How to Remove a Chevy Blazer Rear Transfer Case The transfer case on a Chevrolet Blazer is underneath the vehicle, mounted to the rear of the transmission. On four-wheel drive vehicles, the transfer case takes power generated by the engine and channeled through the transmission and directs it to the front and rear drive axles. Over time, the gears and bearings inside the transfer case can wear and the transfer case must be rebuilt. The transfer case on this vehicle must be removed before it can be serviced.
Things You'll Need
  • Wrench set
  • Floor jack
  • Jack stands
  • Socket set
  • Masking tape
  • Marker
  • Needle-nose pliers

  1. Removing the Driveshafts
    • 1 Disconnect the ground cable from the negative battery terminal, by using a wrench to loosen the retaining bolt and pulling the clamp off the terminal.
  • 2 Raise the vehicle and support with jack stands placed underneath the frame.
  • 3 Drain the transfer case. Locate the drain plug near the bottom of the transfer case. Place a waste oil collection pan underneath the plug and use a socket to remove it. Once all the fluid has drained out, reinstall the plug.
  • 4 Remove the bolts that connect the rear driveshaft to the rear axle yoke using a socket. Lower the driveshaft, and slide it backward underneath the rear axle to disengage it from the transfer case. Remove it from the vehicle.
  • 5 Remove the bolts that connect the front driveshaft to the front axle yoke using a socket. Lower the driveshaft, and slide it forward underneath the front axle to disengage it from the transfer case. Remove the driveshaft from the vehicle.
  • Removing the Transfer Case
    • 6 Label and disconnect the electrical wires and vacuum lines connected to the transfer case. Use masking tape and a marker.
    • 7 Remove the transfer case shifter rod. Using needle-nose pliers, remove the clip that connects the shifter rod to the transfer case. Slide the rod away from the transfer case.
    • 8 Position a floor jack underneath the transfer case. Raise it enough to take the weight of the transfer case off the transmission.
    • 9 Remove the bolts that connect the transfer case to the transmission using a socket or wrench.
    • 10 Slide the transfer case rearward to disengage it from the transfer case. Lower the floor jack, and remove the transfer case from the vehicle

    Hello Denise, if you think you can do this, I can send you instructions to remove the transfer case and reseal the rear of the transmission. I know this may seem like an intimidating job but it can be quite easy. Once the t-case is out you replace the seal inside the back of the transmission and put everything back together.     well i have the same blazer and my transfer case is messed up...the older model chevys had alot of problems with the t-case because the chain inside them grinds against the inside of the t-case and will cause a hole and once there is a hole u have to get a new one its not fixable :( sorry but u will just need to buy a new one or get a new chain for the t-case u will just have to get it looked at because it might not have a crack or a hole in the case shell but if it does you will just need a new one

    The transmission fluid and filter were changed out now truck just whines and wont go into gear


    There should be a dip stick near the rear of the engine compartment with a red handle on it for the transmission. You want to check the trans fluid with engine idling and the trasmission in park. If it's full of fluid and the vehicle won't move you are most likely looking at rebuilding the trans. To change the fluid you have to drop the pan off the tranmission and the filter is inside. The filter just pull out, the new filter will come with a new seal that presses into the the pump housing. DO NOT attempt to change that seal, leave the old one in place, unless it is damaged. Unless you you have the proper tools to replace that seal you will most likely damage the transmission housing trying to remove the old one. Also, if the transmission is low on fluid, where did it go? Is it leaking on the ground? You may want to check the transfer case oil if it's way overfull the seal between the transmission and transfer case is bad and the trany fluid is leaking into the transfer case. You may want to change the transfer case oil too, they both take Dexron III fluid. Good luck!

    could be the rear main seal on trans which you pull the driveshaft out then pull the seal out and pop the new one in of it could be the front seal or oil pan for trans.

    sorry but your stuck with the 4l60e if you want it to be right. as for using the bravada transmission thats fine you just have to use your transfer case. your transfer case uses a switch on the dash and an electric motor on the transfer case. the bravada uses a series of sensors on the front and rear axle that sense wheel slippage and send a signal to the electric motor on the transfer case causing it to lock in four wheel drive. when the sensors dont sense wheel slippage any more the system returns to two wheel drive. that,s why they call it smart track. just unbolt your transfer case from your transmission and bolt it to the bravada transmission and install it. p.s- dont forget to at least change the front pump converter seal. for 4 or 5 bucks it,s cheap insurance against a major leak and i dont think you want to pull that transmission out again and yes i saw that happen to many times. good luck.-G.J.M

    Sounds like the front axle electric actuator is bad. these are mounted on the front differential housing. they are known to go bad.

    if its the rear seal where the driveshaft enters the trans you need a transmission output seal for the tailshaft housing.
