Brake/Shift Interlock System
The shift interlock system prevents the shifting from PARK (P) (when the ignition switch is in the RUN position) unless the brake pedal (2455) is depressed. The interlock system consists of an electrical solenoid mounted at the base of the steering column (3C529). If the ignition switch is in the RUN position, the solenoid has continuous power supplied unless the brake pedal is depressed.
Removal
Remove steering column as outlined in Section 11-04A or Section 11-04B .
Unclip wire terminal from solenoid.
Remove insert plate and solenoid by removing three retaining screws.
Pry off clip.
Installation
NOTE: The clip which retains the solenoid to the insert plate should not be replaced for service. The clip's sole purpose is an assembly aid for the assembly plant.
Position insert plate/solenoid assembly to the steering column and tighten the retaining screws.
Install the steering column in the vehicle as described in Section 11-04A or Section 11-04B .
You should replace all the wires that are in that steering column. Use OEM wire harnesses. There is a clock spring wire in that column that is bad, The shift indicator is a clip on a piece of string that moves when the column turns with the shifter.
under the hood locate the shift cable and take it off the shift link and turn the link counter clock wise until its locked in position then start the car you can adjust the linkage after this step
you need first disconnect negative battery cable. you need steering wheel puller you have to remove steering.look under hood disconnect flange end of the steering shaft at the flexible coupling separate the coupling from the lower end of the steering column. you have to go inside vechicle remove lower steering column cover yoo have to remove steering column dash to panel screws then you have to remove shift linkages and remove disconnect electrical wiring connector to turn signal and ignition switch.your model truck shouldnt have the floor board mounting screw hold column to the floor.
the older column shifters can be a problem, look at where the shifter arms hook to the transmission there should be some plastic bushings on the end of each arm that nay be worn out and cause this problemtry replacing these bushings first when they are worn they won't align the shifter arms to lighn up for the next gear and the trans will have a tendency to hang between gears
Did someone try to tow the truck away? take a look under the truck and see if the linkage is still connectrd to trany, sounds like something inside trany broke or in the steering column, also make sure someone didnt try to steal truck check the plastic covers around the column for breaks.
