Hi the fuel filter could be starving your engine of fuel on high revs so he could be correct also the d5 engine is a 5 cylinder deisel engine so the plugs he must have been refering to Are heater plugs & can send your car into limp mode so you need to know wich one is down you can check this your self by disconecting all the heater plug wires & checking the ohms with a meter of each plug the bad plug will have the least resistance hope this helps

the most common cause of that prob with xtype diesel is the hose going to the intercooler splits and leaks or the jubilee clip on the intercooler has corroded and broken allowing the hose to blow off not easy to get to to repair

2005 caravan all the guages and warning lights are flashing on and off when shut the van off you have to jump it off the more you rev the engine the worse it flashes

We had a similar situation with our 05 Grand Caravan, and the remedy was a new ignition switch.

The radio would come on by itself when no one was around, and dash lights would do crazy things.

Ticking sound could it be my lifters or valves

One Way to find out is get a spark plug wire pulse indicator (its actually pretty cheap). its a device that looks like a short pen with a scoop in it for laying spark plug wire into it. the spark from the coil has such a high voltage that not all of it can be contained. The Indicator actually uses that spark to make it flash in sequence of that one spark plug wire. Check each wire until it flashes in sequence of that "Ticking" sound... if you can get it in sync then the chances are high that it is the lifters. Then rev the engine lightly and see if it stays in sync. This rules out any strange noises coming from an alternator or a belt making that ticking noise. And if you do have a noisy lifter it doesnt mean its the end of your engine. You could put an oil additive with each oil change to "Soften" the impact which will also quiet the lifters more if it really bothers you. Some cars actually have noisy lifters when its due for an oil change(this could come in handy). i hope this helps you out a little bit.

Deisel fuel problems in winter...Utah cold

If your car came with a block heater the plug will be near the front of the call around the grill radiator. Some vehicles have this as a factory option and some do not. If it did not come with one from the factory you can always add a block heater. You have to knock out a freeze plug and install the block heater. If your diesel is geling this will not solve that problem. The block heater is only to aid in starting. You may need new glow plugs in your car if it is having a hard time starting and you may need to add a diesel anti gel which you can buy at most parts stores.

Engine knocking

Hi,
Good news is - I don't think you need a new engine.

As there are many moving parts that could create a knocking sound, it usually needs careful inspection to identify where it is from.
I will give a list of some of the causes and remedies. Yours will probably be one of them, but unless I was there - it could be any.

Loose exhaust component (causes rattles and thumps) - replace parts or joints.
Loose Engine mounts - Engine will move about a lot more than normal - Replacement of mounts.
Fraying Belts - causes continual ticking or slapping - Replace belts and check tension.
Timing is off - bad running, lack of power, pre ignition or knocking at low revs. Check timing belt - Replace, Tune engine.
Cracked valve - slight misfire worse at low revs - Replacement valves.
Clutch Problems - Broken spring or loose bolt - Check clutch plate - replace clutch plates.
Older engines - often accompanying smoke -
Broken Piston ring - continual ticking or occasional misfire - Replace Piston rings
Worn Piston bearings - Piston Slap - Replacement of all piston bearings.

Transmission Problems (only heard when in gear or with clutch out) - Broken gear teeth or worn bearings - Replacement of Transmission or rebuild.

Some of these remedies require engine removal and strip down, others are a simpler fix.

There should be a small wire harness on the inside of the driver side tow hook under the bumper. The chord is very short and has a cap over the plug. Just reach in and you'll find a black cable about 1/2" thick. There's another wire tapped into it that has the plug end.
