I replaced the alternator and when I crak back on the van stay on 4000 rpm on parking. what can cause these problem

Avoid a dead battery


If your battery is discharging while the van is parked up, there's 3 general causes:
  • The battery itself is failing and cannot hold a charge. replacement is the only option.
  • There is a fault within the alternator - either the alternator is not charging or it is allowing the battery to drain because the diodes (the rectifier in the alternator) have failed.
  • There's a parasitic drain of power somewhere. Something is remaining 'live' when the van is parked up - and draining the battery.
Many places will do a free battery check.

Probably a dirty fuel filter restricting the delivery of fuel to the engine.

2000 pontiac grand am 3.4 motor auto trans 4 door.Car starts and drives okay motor seems to stumble slightly between 3000-4000 rpms. with car stopped in park try to rev motor will only go between 3200-4000...


Hi Tom your vehicle is equipped with a Rev limiter it will not allow you to rev the engine above 4000 with the trans in park; as for the first problem you may have one of two things, one of the spark plugs or spark plug wires is bad or you have a flat spot on the throttle positioning sensor in which case have be replaced. Driving van down the road and the RPM shot right up and the vehicle started to slow down. Stepped on gas, no movement but RPM still went up. Stopped van and it would stay in park but would not engage any...


I had a Ford Winstar van that had this problem. There is an acceleration switch near the firewall on the passenger side that needs replacing. Unless you're very good under the hood, see a mechanic as it's a totall B**ch to get to the darn thing!

Fuel probelms


Try hitting the brake off and on to see if the rpm changes when you do that with the car in park. If it does, you may have a ruptured brake booster. A fluctuating rpm while your car is in park with the brake on indicates a vacuum loss. Other things may cause a vacuum leak including the air conditioner controls inside the vehicle. Other things that cause this may be cruise control or your Air Conditioners high idle solenoid.

Where is the voltage regulator on a 99 mercury cougar?


The voltage regulator is a part of the alternator.If you are having pulsating issues then look for grounding issues like a corrided eyelet or loose grounding bolts.

Flickering charge light on dash when RPM's are above 2000. At about 4000 RPM's enginge stumbles.


Sounds like a diode might be going bad in the alternator. If you rev the engine in park or neutral the computer has a rev limiter that kicks in at 4000 rpms. That is normal, it is trying to keep the engine from blowing up. I'd have the alternator checked, it might check ok but be leaking ac voltage.
