Question about 2003 Jeep Grand Cherokee

1 Answer

I have a 2003 Jeep Grand Cherokee and the ignition switch seems to be getting bad. I can usually get it to start by jiggling the key around and sliding it in and out while turning it. It will start right away if I get the key just right otherwise, I get nothing, no dash or accessory lights or indicators. Does this sound like a switch going bad or an electrical problem? Mechanic not listening to me.

It sounds like the ignition cylinder itself is worn and needs replacement. the fact that you cant turn the key. thing that can cause this is if you have to many keys on your key chain .

How do I know if my ignition switch is bad on my 1995 jeep grand cherokee lerado 5.2 liter

The ignition switch does not usually go bad on Grand Cherokees but the ignition key cylinder does and it usually just stop turning, stuck in place. Key cylinder can be removed by taking the steering wheel off to access the little clip that's holding the key cylinder in place, inside the steering column.

I can't seem to get the key out of the ignition of my 1993 4x4 automatic Jeep Grand Cherokee when I'm in Park. What is the problem? I jiggle the steering wheel, turn the key and put it in drive and...

sounds like a wafer inside the lock has failed, broke or jammed and is not letting the key out.
one thing that you can try is to spray down the side of the key some silicone/teflon based lubrication ( using the small red spray tube that comes with the lube can ) and see if it will free up the wafer inside the lock,, but if this does not free it up then the lock will need to be removed and rebuilt by a automotive locksmith. OR you can remove the old ignition switch and install a new one.

2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland. New ignition switch, car starts runs for a few seconds and turns off on its own....

There is an issue with your transponder key. Call a locksmith and have them reprogram the key you have into the computer. I do this all the time. Depending on who changed out the ignition they may have don't damage to the reader that surrounds the ignition. Sometimes they don't put it back in the right spot and it won't read the key.

Try gently tapping the starter motor with a hammer or bar. There may be a bad contact in the sollenoid or the starter motor brushes worn to their limit. Tapping may give you a tempory fix if the problem lies in the starter motor.

Check the relays under the engine. Swich them around and see if it will actually run when you switch them/ Try ALL relays. I just had to do this on my 90 cherokee. The relays are only a couple bucks at any autoparts store. They are usually square shaped and black. There might be a plastic cover on them, they are underneith the hood.

Problems starting my jeep

It may be the shifter interlock switch - jiggle the shifter into and out of Park.
It may also be the Ground/neg battery cable - they corrode at the fenderwell every 2-3 years. Remove from battery and fenderwell, bruch off white powdery corrosion. Reinstall.

Service 4 wheel drive, service electronic brake warning

This is caused by by a bad ignition switch. According to the dealer the ignition switch contains an antenna that many of the sensors use to communicate with the vehicle, as well as the key fob. When the switch starts going bad the vehicle computer losses communication with these sensors and starts producing codes which include the 4wd and the electronic brakes. My fiance has had the same issues with her Grand Cherokee as well as the key fob not working, the remote start not working, the service engine light comes on, the door chime will sound when the key is NOT in the ignition and the lights are NOT on, as well as numerous codes usually relating to loss of communication with one system or another. All of which are fixed once the ignition switch is replaced. Unfortunately, this usually only fixes the problem for a short time (weeks or maybe a few months) before the piece of junk ignition switch fails again and it all starts over.
