My AC clutch went and I would like to by pass the AC

The Saab Delaer tells me the fix is to replace the compressor which is a very expensive fix so I would like to reroute the belt past the AC and the tell me they can't do it?
Any ideas?

Maybe you can get a cheaper unit on eBay?
Or find someone to recondition the one you have.

I did this ebay search and the prices were from about $250 to $500+ (AU)

Are you thinking about rigging it up so you don't have air conditioning any more?

I guess you could measure the distance around the remaining pulleys and get a belt of the required length. It would depend if there was anything else in the way of the path that the shorter belt would take.

Also it would depend on what is used to tension the belt. Hopefully it is not the position of the air conditioner compressor. Run a small piece of rope around the pulleys to see and use it to measure the length.

Belt broke because compressor clutch went bad??

AC Clutch noise and vibration

An A/C clutch will not make this concern happen, more likely the A/C compressor is begining to go out. The belt on the A/C clutch Assy. free wheels (spins feree on the pulley) when clutch is not engaged. If concern is not present with A/C off this means the bearings in the puley assy. ok. Once the A/C clutch is engaged it locks the compressor against the spinning pulley and turn the compressor chaft and spins the A/C compressor internal shaft. If you hear a loud "screach" when you turn on the A/C it means the belt slipped for a second, if it continiues to screach it means either the belt is loose or that the compressor is internaly locking up. I wouild start by checking the belt tension (if not equipted with and auto tensioner). You can also remove the belt and turn on the A/C and attempt to turn the clutch/pulley by hand, it should turn with a little effect but should not bind or lock at times if that happens compressor is bad.

Hi. I have a 2003 Ford Taurus that has a problem with the AC Clutch. There was a pretty nasty noise coming from my AC compressor, even when I wasn't using the AC. I took it in and the mechanic seemed

Yes in most of these instenses you can replace just the clutch assy. advance auto parts does offer it sepperatly. and they wont have to even open any lines. it just requires a special puller kit.

I have a 2002 honda odyssey that the ac is not working. It blows hot air instead of cold.

Hello,

There are 4 main issues to the AC on a car (not including wiring or more advanced troubleshooting)

1 Recharge (Cheap do it your self Recharge kit from auto shop)

2 The belt that it drives it (Least expensive Replace Belt)

3 The clutch on the compressor (Expensive because you have to puge the system R/R the compressor check the evaporator for damge repressurize system and test.

4 The compressor went bad (Most expensive Usually when a compressor fails it will send metal shavings throughout the system that will cause the system to fail again the soulation is the same as 3 but now you need to replace the evaporator and flush all the AC lines out.

Can I replace the A/C clutch myself or do I need any special tools? Can I by pass this with a different belt?

bypassing the compressor is best to do. get a belt for your engine less the ac option. the removal and tear down of any compressor is not easy for a novice

CAN THE SERPENTINE BELT BE REROUTED TO BYPASS THE A/C COMPRESSOR?

No. The bearing on the compressor can be replaced without buying an entire compressor.

1997 Eagle Talon AC button switch blinks AC won't work

If the button is blinking, this means the clutch is either worn out, or the clutch is not engaging because of an electrical problem. Check the electrical connection going to the AC, does it look alright? Is there any fluid inside the connector? I would replace the AC compressor if the clutch persists to not engage.

AC problem

Sounds like the bearing and clutch went out. Its best to replace the compressor, unless you got the tools and knowhow to chg. the clutch and bearing. If you just chg. out the compressor, the refregerent has to be drained out first, and then unbolt lines on back of compressor, and electrical wires, and belt, and bolts then remove. Put new compressor on in reverse order. But system should be vacumed be for its recharged with refregerent.

I think the air compressor is bad in the truck

If your refrigerant level is OK and the truck blows cold air your compressor should be fine, in which case the noise is probably coming from the AC clutch which isn't too expensive or difficult to replace. If it doesn't blow cold air, switch the AC on and watch the compressor. If the clutch engages, but the compressor doesn't turn, the drive belt will squeal loudly and probably start to smoke. In that case it is the compressor which is expensive to replace. Most vehicles have an AC bypass that will temporarily cut out the compressor clutch under heavy load. If you are going uphill with the AC on or accelerating heavily you might notice warm air coming out of the vents for a short period until you let off the gas.

94 Saab 90 SE AC blows hot air

Hi Bill
Usually the clutch is frozen means you need Freon R-12, please go to the small glass window on the condenser to find out there is some white bubbling inside, if you have white bubbling means your AC lack Freon, but if you lost all Freon, the window is clear, so you have to check, I hope from there, you can tell the Freon level.
