Tappets dont squeak .. you want to hope the noise is coming from an ageing or loose fan belt .. if it is really coming from inside the valve cover then it could be a blocked oil passage that lubs the cam and its bearings ..this would soon cause a major engine failure .. other possibilities .. a bad bearing in the idler pully, water pump or alternator (a drop of oil on those can help identify the failing bearing) ... also at times the distributor can cause noise if its bearings run dry .. there is a really neat stethoscope like tool that allows you to listen to various parts and places to locat the problem .. but be careful playing around a running engine (no ties, long hair, necklaces .. if its the fan belt then it will likely make more noise as the engine is accelerating .. turning the lights on might increase or change the noise .. a leaky vacuum hose can cause a whistle like sound. .

ok .. if its a clicking noise (not squeeking) then things change a lot ... if the engine has hydraulic lifters (almost all do) then they are self adjusting .. they make noise only when something is wrong .. .. one thing that can cause this is if the oil is really really dirty or hasnt been changed for a long time .. that can cause the lifters to stick and make noise .. if the engine was allowed to run without oil or very low oil then that could cause damage .. if the oil pump is not working you will also get a clatter .. that should trigger a check engine light .. one thing you need to know .. is it a clatter as if many things were causing the noise or is it just a single tap tap tap .. if the oil hasnt been changed for a long time then cleaning out the engine (drain and replace with only 2 or 3 quarts) run that for a few min then drain again and refill with high quality (high detergent) oil . replace filter .. if dirty lifters are the problem then that should clear up in a few days or so ..

Valve tappets can squeak. I'm dealing with one now - on a Triumph 650 mc engine. because the rocker rotates on a spindle it must travel slightly across the valve head as it depresses and releases the valve - unless there's so much play in the guide that the rocker can carry the valve on it's little sideways excursion. If there's not enough lubricant on the valve head and the top of the valve has lost it's polish it can squeak loud. In my case a tiny spray with wd solves the problem for an hour or so, but I'm still trying to figure out a low budget permanent fix - which is why I'm here.

How do I fix the tapping sound from the engine when i accelerate after it has reached running temperature

Adjust the valve tappets (yes, they 'tap') AKA Rockers or find out why the hydraulic self adjusting tappets don't work?

They transfer the downward motion of the cams on the camshaft to depress the valves. There is a thin clearance of about 8 thousandths of an inch with the engine cold. As the engine heats the clearance reduces. Over tightening causes the valve edges to burn, too much clearance causes tapping.

Manual tappets get quieter usually as the engine heats. Hydraulic tappets gets worse as the engine heats as the oil thins.

How do I adjust my valve clearance (tarpets) and timing on my mazda 323 E3.

tappets are done by the rule of 9 ,ie-1 down adjust 9------- 2 down adust 7 ------3 down adjust 6 .as for timing it shouldnt need touching unless you have points and a distributor which i think this year uses a module inside the distributor cap so it should not need touching

Fast tapping sound from top drivers side of engine when excellerating fast any ideas?

Tapping on the top of an engine is caused by excess valve tappet clearance.

You can have a worn rocker arm also.

Loose valve tappets usually are the loudest at a constant engine speed. when there is little torgue being produced.

A worn rocker arm with a bearing problem will make more noise during acclleration.

A fairly consistent tapping noise from the top of the engine between 50 - 70 mph. After 70-75 mph in seems to quiet down.

sounds like a lifter is bleeding out or starving for oil at low revs
check oil level and oil pressure
if thats good lifter or tappet clearance next to check
is engine seviced regularly?
slugde build up can cause problems also
if V6 petrol see a lot of worn valve guides causing noise worse when warm and noise comes in and out at 1200RPM
tappet clearance issue noise would be there all the time
lifter can also come and go while holding revs up
