How to remove? Switch continues to spin. Column intact. Do I have to remove the steering wheel or can the switch be pulled out and replaced?

Ignition Lock Cylinder REMOVAL & INSTALLATION With Key

  1. Disconnect the battery ground.
  2. On tilt columns, remove the upper extension shroud by unsnapping the shroud from the retaining clip at the 9 o'clock position.
  3. Remove the trim shroud halves.
  4. Unplug the wire connector at the key warning switch.
  5. Place the shift lever in PARK and turn the key to ON .
  6. Place a 1⁄8 in. (3mm) wire pin in the hole in the casting surrounding the lock cylinder and depress the retaining pin while pulling out on the cylinder.
  7. When installing the cylinder, turn the lock cylinder to the RUN position and depress the retaining pin, then insert the lock cylinder into its housing in the flange casting. Assure that the cylinder is fully seated and aligned in the interlocking washer before turning the key to the OFF position. This will allow the cylinder retaining pin to extend into the cylinder cast housing hole.
  8. The remainder of installation is the reverse of removal.
Non-Functioning Cylinder or No Key Available FIXED COLUMNS
  1. Disconnect the battery ground.
  2. Remove the steering wheel.
  3. Remove the turn signal lever.
  4. Remove the column trim shrouds.
  5. Unbolt the steering column and lower it carefully.
  6. Remove the ignition switch and warning buzzer and pin the switch in the LOCK position.
  7. Remove the turn signal switch.
  8. Remove the snapring and T-bolt nuts that retain the flange casting to the column outer tube.
  9. Remove the flange casting, upper shaft bearing, lock cylinder, ignition switch actuator and the actuator rod by pulling the entire assembly over the end of the steering column shaft.
  10. Remove the lock actuator insert, the T-bolts and the automatic transmission indicator insert, or, with manual transmissions, the key release lever.
  11. Upon reassembly, the following parts must be replaced with new parts:
    • Flange
    • Lock cylinder assembly
    • Steering column lock gear
    • Steering column lock bearing
    • Steering column upper bearing retainer
    • Lock actuator assembly
  12. Assembly is a reversal of the disassembly procedure. It is best to install a new upper bearing. Check that the truck starts only in PARK and NEUTRAL.

    1. Disconnect the battery ground.
    2. Remove the steering column shrouds.
    3. Using masking tape, tape the gap between the steering wheel hub and the cover casting. Cover the entire circumference of the casting. Cover the seat and floor area with a drop-cloth.
    4. Pull out the hazard switch and tape it in a downward position.
    5. The lock cylinder retaining pin is located on the outside of the steering column cover casting adjacent to the hazard flasher button.
    6. Tilt the steering column to the full up position and pre-punch the lock cylinder retaining pin with a sharp punch.
    7. Using a 1⁄8 in. (3mm) drill bit, mounted in a right angle drive drill adapter, drill out the retaining pin, going no deeper than 1⁄2 in. (13mm).
    8. Tilt the column to the full down position. Place a chisel at the base of the ignition lock cylinder cap and using a hammer break away the cap from the lock cylinder.
    9. Using a 3⁄8 in. (10mm) drill bit, drill down the center of the ignition lock cylinder key slot about 1 3⁄4 in. (44mm), until the lock cylinder breaks loose from the steering column cover casting.
    10. Remove the lock cylinder and the drill shavings.
    11. Remove the steering wheel.
    12. Remove the turn signal lever.
    13. Remove the turn signal switch attaching screws.
    14. Remove the key buzzer attaching screw.
    15. Remove the turn signal switch up and over the end of the column, but don't disconnect the wiring.
    16. Remove the 4 attaching screws from the cover casting and lift the casting over the end of the steering shaft, allowing the turn signal switch to pass through the casting. The removal of the casting cover will expose the upper actuator. Remove the upper actuator.
    17. Remove the drive gear, snapring and washer from the cover casting along with the upper actuator.
    18. Clean all components and replace any that appear damaged or worn.
    19. Installation is the reverse of removal.

Ignition switch removal/replacement for 1995 vw passat

Disconnect the negative battery cable. Remove the steering wheel, and then remove the steering column covers. Remove the turn signal and wiper switches. Disconnect the ignition switch wiring. Remove the clamping washer, spring and contact ring from the steering column, and then remove the lock housing up off the column tube and steering column. Remove the ignition switch mounting fastener and remove the switch. Installation is in reverse order of removal noting the following: Press the contact ring, spring and clamping washer onto the steering column using a properly sized and sturdy metal pipe or tube. If after installation of the clamping washer, the steering column is not projecting out far enough, pull the steering column out further.

Hello there, here are a few tips to guide you through.

  • Disconnect the negative battery connection cable from the battery terminal. Remove both the upper and lower steering column covers by either unscrewing them or unclipping them, depending on your car make and model. You may need to use a small pry bar to remove the upper and lower steering column covers, if so, use caution and take your time, you don't want to shatter or crack the plastic covers.
  • Remove the steering wheel cover and unscrew the steering wheel from the steering column, there should be six bolts securing it in place. Pull the steering wheel off the shaft slightly and make a mark on both the steering wheel and the shaft to make it easier to line up during the reassembly process. Disconnect the horn wire from the steering wheel by pulling on the boot --- not the wire itself --- to avoid any damage. Pull the steering wheel straight back and remove it entirely from the assembly.
  • Remove the spacer sleeve off the steering column. Remove the large center nut and washer from the steering column that secures the steering wheel adapter in place. Don't remove the steering wheel adapter until you have made a mark on it and the shaft so that you can properly realign them when reassembling. Gently remove the adapter by pulling straight back on it and set it aside.
  • Remove the three screws securing the stock in position. Remove the screws securing the plastic casing around the stock and take the casing off. Carefully pull the stock away from the steering column and gently guide the wires out until they have cleared the steering column, revealing the ignition switch assembly. You don't have to remove the wires from the stock; it's light enough to hang by the wires and not cause damage. Just pull out enough so that it's out of the way. In some cases, the stock will come apart in two pieces. If that's the case, slide off the first piece of the stock and unscrew the second piece, which is usually the piece that connects to your signal switch. Pull it off and bring it together with the first piece of the stock.
  • Remove the small plastic spacer collar around the steering column by gently prying it back inch by inch. Remove the Allen head bolt located on the underside of the steering column and pull back the assembly with the ignition switch. Unplug the wires from the back of the ignition switch and pull it away from the steering column.
  • Insert your key into the ignition and turn it to the locked position. Unscrew the small Phillips screw securing the ignition switch in the ignition switch assembly and slide it out. Put your new ignition switch into the ignition switch assembly and reassemble the entire steering system in the reverse order. Some ignition switch models will require you to depress a retaining pin with a small screwdriver while the key is in the locked position to remove it from the assembly. If your ignition switch is not secured with a small Phillips screw, look for the retaining pin.

How do I change 1994 TOYOTA CAMRY Ignition Switch / Lock

Here's the procedure on how to remove and install the ignition switch.

Disconnect the car's negative battery cable.
Insert the key into the lock cylinder and turn it to the Accessory position--turn it to the left. Make sure the front wheels are facing straight ahead before you do this.
Pry off the covers on the sides of the steering wheel concealing the air bag's mounting screws. Remove the screws with a Torx wrench, pull the air bag off the wheel and disconnect its electrical connectors.
Remove the steering wheel--unplug the electrical connector to the horn and cruise control, remove the wheel's retaining nut with a wrench, mark the hub's relationship to the steering shaft with tape and remove the wheel with a steering wheel puller.
Remove the steering column covers by removing the two Phillips screws on the sides and separating the two halves of the covers.
Unplug the electrical connectors for the ignition switch.
Unscrew the retaining screws for the ignition switch with a screwdriver and pull the switch out of the lock cylinder's housing.
Insert the replacement ignition switch into the lock cylinder housing--the lock cylinder must still be in the Accessory position--and secure it with the retaining screws. Connect the electrical connectors to the switch.
Connect the steering column covers to the column and secure them with their Phillips screws.
Install the steering wheel to the column, then connect the air bag to the wheel with its electrical connector and Torx screws.
Re-connect the battery cable.

I need to replace the multi-function wiper switch on a 2003 Chev express van, what type of screw driver is needed to remove the steering column housing that contains the switch?

the switch is underneath the steering wheel. the steering wheel needs to be pulled to replace the switch. the airbag is in the steering wheel, and a trained tech with a puller is needed to pull that wheel off without screwing up the airbag.

Remove ignition switch for a 2004 kia optima

Ignition Switch Removal & Installation To Remove:
  1. Disconnect battery negative cable.
  2. Disarm air bag system.
  3. Remove driver air bag module.
  4. Loosen screw and lift horn pad to remove.
  5. Remove lock nut and washer. CAUTION
    Do not hammer on steering wheel. Damage can occur to the energy absorbing portion of the steering column.
  6. Pull dynamic damper forward and lift up to remove.
  7. Remove steering wheel.
  8. Remove steering column shrouds.
  9. Remove lower cover.
  10. Remove multifunction switch.
  11. Remove entire lower portion of dash.
  12. Remove mounting fasteners and lower steering column.
  13. Remove bolts and separate ignition switch from steering column.
To Install:
  1. Install ignition switch to steering column and install bolts.
  2. Raise steering column and install mounting fasteners.
  3. Install lower portion of dash.
  4. Install multifunction switch.
  5. Install lower cover.
  6. Install steering column shrouds.
  7. Install steering wheel.
  8. Install dynamic damper.
  9. Install washer and lock nut.
  10. Lift horn pad and install screw.
  11. Install driver air bag module.
  12. Connect battery negative cable.

Removal & Installation

1. Disable the SIR system.

Remove the Instrument Panel (I/P) center trim panel by releasing the retaining fasteners

  1. Remove the Instrument Panel (I/P) center trim panel (1) by pulling out on the trim panel in order to release the retaining fasteners (2).
  2. Disconnect the electrical connectors on the Instrument Panel (I/P) center trim panel (1).

Remove the steering column opening filler assembly, with clip, & bumper

3. Remove the steering column opening filler assembly (1) by pulling away the clips (2).
4. Disconnect the electrical connector for the trunk release.


Remove the Instrument Panel (I/P) left side trim panel

  1. Remove the Instrument Panel (I/P) left side trim panel (1).
  2. Tilt the steering wheel up.
  3. Disconnect the I/P dimmer switch and, if equipped, the fog lamp switch.


Remove the 4 bezel screws (2) & the Instrument Panel (I/P) cluster bezel assembly (1)

  1. Tilt the steering wheel down.
  2. Remove the 4 instrument panel cluster bezel screws.
  3. Remove the instrument panel cluster bezel.


Remove the steering column trim covers: steering column upper cover assembly, steering column left cover assembly, & steering column right cover assembly

Remove the steering column trim covers:
  • Remove the 3 cover screws (4).
  • Remove the steering column upper cover assembly (1).
  • Remove the steering column left cover assembly (2).
  • Remove the steering column right cover assembly (3).

Removal of the ignition switch

    1. Disconnect the ignition switch harness connector.
    1. WARNING
    The ignition switch must be in the run position during removal in order to avoid damage to the ignition switch.

    1. Turn the ignition switch to the run position.
    2. Remove the ignition switch screws.
    3. Remove the ignition switch from the steering column.
    To install:
    1. Install the ignition switch and screws on to the steering column. Tighten the screws to 17 inch lbs. (2 Nm).
    2. Connect the ignition switch harness connector.
    3. Installation is the reverse of removal procedure.
    4. Tighten the trim cover screws to 17 inch lbs. (2 Nm)
    5. Tighten the 4 instrument panel cluster bezel screws to 19 inch lbs. (2 Nm)
    6. Enable the SIR system. Refer to Air Bag (Supplemental Restraint System), arming the system.
      NOTE If the ignition switch is replaced and a learn procedure is not performed, the engine will crank but not start or will start and stall immediately.

    7. Perform the vehicle theft deterrent system learn procedure.

    I have a 87 blazer s10... the turnswitch /wiper/highbeam switch is broken and is shorting out my brakelights ..i cant seem to get to it.. took the steering weel off but ..?

    Unfortunately there are some special tools required you will need to get to the turn-signal switch. Below is the procedure for replacing the turn-signal switch. Generally you can rent the puller from a local auto parts jobber or you can purchase one.

    Many vehicles use a turn signal switch that is separate from the multifunction switch. The steering wheel will have to be removed to gain access to the turn signal switch on these vehicles. The following procedure is a common method of turn signal switch replacement:
    • Place the fender covers on the fenders.
    • Disconnect the negative battery cable.
    • Remove the steering column trim.
    • Remove the horn pad from the steering wheel.

    • Remove the steering wheel and horn collar.
    • Use a suitable puller to remove the steering wheel.
    • With a suitable compressor, compress the preload spring to the lock plate. Compress the spring only enough to remove the snap ring.

    • Use a pick and a small flat blade screwdriver to remove the snap ring.

    • Disconnect the turn signal wiring connector.
    • Wrap tape around the wire and connector.
    • Remove the hazard warning knob from the column.
    • Remove the switch retaining screws and remove the switch.

    How to pull steering column for blinker switch replacement

    You will need some tools like a steering wheel puller and a few other tools. Take the cover off the steering wheel and the centre nut from the steering wheel. Use the remover to pull the steering wheel. Take the shroud off of the column and you will be able to see what is holding the switch onto the column. Remove the wiring harness and remove screws for the turn signal switch. There might be a star with a pin in the centre. Put the new switch on and put it all back together.

    How do i change the ignition key switch in my 1988 gmc sierra

    if your key won't work ,the steering wheel has to come off to replace key switch - special tools needed - if the problem is engine not starting or cranking over - the electric switch the key rod goes down to is on the bottom of the steering column above brake pedal

    Replacing the ignition switch in a 96 ford mustang cobra svt

    Follow these steps carefully. this will help you achieve this replacement.

    1. Disconnect the negative battery cable from the terminal on the battery. Remove the upper and lower steering column covers by unscrewing them.

    2. Remove the steering wheel by lifting off the center cover, disconnecting the horn wire and removing the retaining nut and washer. Make a mark on the steering wheel spline and the wheel itself so you can line it back up precisely. Pull the steering wheel straight back to remove from the shaft.

    3. Take off windshield wiper and turn signal switches by pulling them off as you did the steering wheel and disconnect the wiring. Slide the spacer sleeve off of the steering column.

    4. Unscrew the ignition switch mounting screws. Pull out the ignition switch. Disconnect the wiring connector from back of the ignition switch. Simply loosen the tabs and pull it out.

    5. Insert your key into the ignition. Turn the ignition switch to the locked position. Depress the retaining pin with a small screwdriver and turn the key to the Off position to free the cylinder. Once it is free, turn the key to lock position and remove the key and key cylinder.

    6. Install your old key cylinder into the new ignition switch assembly. Make sure the contacts in the cylinder and assembly line up. Reattach wiring to ignition switch, slide it into place, screw in mounting screws and reassemble steering wheel and switches.
