A low battery or loose cable connection could be your problem. If the starter is not getting enough amps to crank the solenoid will click in and out.

Ford 150 not starting from key

Sounds like a broken wire from the ignition switch to the solenoid. - if it starts when you crank it over, the switch is probably good, because if the switch was bad the control module would not get the signal to keep the car running - it would think the key was turned off.
But sometimes you do get a bad solenoid or switch, coming new off the shelf, due to quality control issues. try another solenoid to be sure. or if the car cranks but does not run, try another switch.

1985 f150 4x4 truck died got spark fuel but will not fire

check your starter solenoid (put key in run position and use jumper wire to connect both big terminals if it starts and runs replace it) if no change then check ignition switch, and ignition module(most parts stores can test this once you have it off.

I think the ignition switch is stuck in 83 ford f150. when you put battery cables on it is trying to start. I can put the key in and turn it and take it back out, but until the battery is disconnected it...

If your able to remove the key it's more likely that your solenoid is locking up. If the engine is actually starting then it could be the bendix is locking into the flywheel and not allowing the starter to release.

F150 ignition (won't Start)

If it turns over but just won't fire and the timing sounds fine when it does run you might consider your ignition switch.  Does it sound like it wants to fire but only just when you let go of the key?
