Your pump might have been fine the whole time. If your RPM goes low, your fluid pressures drop. If your power steering gets to the point of failure at low RPMs, I would recommend you re-check how much power steering fluid you have.

Power steering fluid leak in back of motor down low . Can it be steering gear related ? 2001 impala

If it is a 3.8 liter it could be the power steering pump, lines or steering gear. If it is a 3.4 liter, most likely lines or steering gear because the pump is at the top of the engine.

lost engine power, or transmission slips????
which is it?
the engine rpm tells you if the engine is weak or transmission slips.
2.0 liter , DOHC I4, J20 engine.
which transmission, my guess A/T box. (sounds like?) sure..
test one
1: in drive. pointed in safe direction, say a field or ?
2: parked, hand brake and foot brake held hard and fast.
3: race engine to wide open throttle for 1 to 3 seconds.
and lift right foot. after noting RPM. quckly.
4: rpm below 2200 rpm is a weak engine , if the engine spools
wildly up to 3500 rpm or more, the transmission is bad. (slips)
this is called the stall test. (in the FSM)
2,300 - 2,600 r/min. for H25/J20 engine
stall test passes. so does the transmission reach 4th gear.
1,2,3,4? yes/ .no.
yes, the its not the transmission.
if engine power lacks in any gear, that is the engine. weak.

this post is about the engine power, (my answer)
will you change 100 more parts guessing?
why do that?, any shop can diagnose it for a fraction of your guessing.

if the trans dont slip
  1. over heating? the engine?
  2. never done a tuneup this decade?> really?
  3. low fuel pressure?
  4. low engine compression.?
  5. Bad MAF sensors or just dirty?
  6. check engine light on running?, why ignore that, scan it.
  7. weak spark , see #2 and 6
  8. leaking or clogged injectors. or stuck on, for 2 reasons.
  9. Intake vacuum air leaks>?

both the engine and transmissions are complex
as is the vast number of tests to do. based on previous tests and logic.
do you want to test or gue$$?

Power steering does not work at low rpm

What is the idling RPM of the engine when this is happening? There are many different types of power steering systems out there these days on vehilcles. It would make it a bit easier if we had a little more information before we give you advice. Year, Make Model, Milage, ect...Any other known issues with vehilce? Yes, the most likely culprit could be the pump because as time goes on the internal pump compoinents start to wear down and the tolerances become to great and at low rmp it cannot keep the proper pressure needed to give adequate power assist to the steering gear.
Hope this helps

Transmission shifting shifts only at high rpm

2001 Volkswagen Jetta TDI

THE 5 SPEED AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION

At the bottom of the automatic gearbox (tiptronic) you will find one threaded plug on below surface, (follow red arrow in the picture below). This is for emptying.

The oil level threaded plug is placed on the car front lateral automatic gearbox surface, (follow yellow arrow in the picture below).

The filling oil plug is placed on the upper automatic gearbox surface, (follow green arrow in the picture below).

Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF) checking:
1. Requirements for check:
1.1. Vehicle standing on level surface.
1.2. Transmission must not be in fail-safe mode.
1.3. Shift lever in "P" position, parking brake applied.
1.4. Engine idling.
1.5. Air Conditioner and heater OFF.
1.6. ATF temperature must not exceed 104 Fahrenheit degree (40 Celsius degree) at start of test.
1.7. Automatic gearbox oil capacity: 2,5 liter. Only ATF with VW designation may be used. Do not use any lubricant additives.
1.8. Automatic Transmission Fluid ATF - part number: VW G 052 990 A2
1.9. An ATF level check when transmission oil temperature is too low results in overfilling, when too high results in underfilling.
2. CAUTION: Too much or too little ATF will affect the operation of the transmission. The ATF level must be checked at regular intervals.

Steering wheel is hard to turn...is that power steering fluid? Is there a specific kind for 2001 Zx2?

Does your car make a groaning noise when you turn the wheel? It could be a few different things. The first thing you want to do is check your power steering fluid. If it's low, top it off and see if that helped. It just takes a standard power steering fluid, nothing specific.

If the power steering fluid was low and that fixed the problem, you need to ask yourself the question - Why was the fluid low? There's probably a leak somewhere that needs to be fixed.

If the power steering fluid wasn't low, then there's a couple other things it could be. If the car makes a groaning noise when you turn the wheel, chances are that you have a bad power steering pump. If there's no noise and you just don't have any power steering at all then it could be a bad pump or a bad power steering rack.

Hopefully this helps you figure it out. Good Luck!

2001 golf, changed timing belt, now car only goes to 2800 rpm

check that you havent bent a valve in the cylinder head. Do a compression check on each of the cylinders if it is low on any this more than likely a bent valve resulting in no power from that cylinder.
