Question about 1992 Ford Bronco

2 Answers

Weak spark from dist cap to plugs. spark from coil primary is as it should be. Plugs were carbon fouled from rich condition. this is a 92 bronco 5.8 windsor motor.changed out plugs, cap, rotor, and remote tfi module.will start eventually after throttle is wide open for 10 to 15 secs while cranking. thought it was starving for fuel, but now think I don't have enough spark to fire the plugs. dist was 180 out, but I fixed that. wires are correct. when I can start it, I get black smoke from the exhaust. coolant sensor was bad, so I replaced that. any suggestions?

The engine is definitely in an over rich fuel condition if you are blowing black smoke. I would suspect a bad 02 sensor, but the flooding condition you describe at starting could be other things. I would check the codes and proceed from there.

If you're getting weak spark to the distributor cap I would still consider replacing the coil, even if you appear to have correct readings. I had a similar problem not too long ago where I was getting weak spark to the plugs and it turned out it was the coil.

Check the inside of the distributor cap for "carbon tracks", which is a bad cap with a path to ground for the ignition pulse. You would need a new dist. cap and rotor, if you see those carbon tracks.

If you can tell me what color the wire is I should be able to tell you where it goes.
But if you are getting spark from the coil tower the primary ignition system is working.
Have you checked the coil wire, and will it fire a plug ? The coil could be weak enough to fire a plug in open air but not in a cylinder under compression.
You do know for a fact the distributor rotor is turning, right ?

97 pontiac firebird 5.7L HAS NO spark from optispark but has spark from coil

This engine uses a special flat cap and a standard rotor, right ? The spark comes into the cap and thru the rotor, then to the spark plugs.
Have you replaced the rotor ?
The spark can jump thru the rotor and ground thru the dist. shaft.
Depending on where you are testing for spark, the coil could also be weak and not pushing the spark to the plugs.

You need to check that the spark plugs are in good condition and check the spark (spark should be blue = good, yellow = weak spark ) Is there an engine light on? if the plugs are black this is a rich condition (to much fuel, or fuel not burning) the spark plug wires could be bad, weak ignitor,

No spark goin to plugs

1. Check the ignition coil. It must produce a good
spark at the distributor contact.
2. Check the distributor cap, and the rotor for carbon
deposits. This must be cleaned.
3. Check the spark plug cables for cracks, it may
need replacement.
4. Check the spark plugs. It must produce a bluish
spark. Otherwise, this must be replaced.

ignition module in the distributor may be breaking down!
its a common fault as they dont like getting hot!
spark plug gap is critical with these types of sytems
test each plug as you may have fractured one when fitting it

Cyl#3&5 foul plugs 97 suburban good compression all cyl new cap rotor distributor wires plugs module

Fouling occurs when the spark plugs' firing tip becomes coated with excessive fuel, oil, or combustion deposits so that it is unable to produce a spark. A plug can become fouled from continuous low speed driving, improper spark plug heat range (too cold), improper timing (over-retarded), too rich an air/fuel ratio or an oil leak into the combustion chamber. A variety of self-cleaning features are designed into most plugs to reduce fouling.

try and use the factory recomended coil, incorrect coil can heat up and than not acheive the required discharge to fire the plugs. also will lead to the coil failing, or ECM faulting and throwing a Check Engine Light.

Put on analyzer number 4 cycliner is missfiring

Replace the spark plugs and wire set and add fuel injector cleaner in the gas tank for the next three fill up's. If money is tight try swapping the spark plug wire with another wire and see if the missfire moves, but before you do that inspect the spark plug's condition. Remove the spark plug to see if it's fouled with carbon which is a run rich condition and if there was detonation the plugs will have a worn or damaged electrode. Keep me posted, be glad to help.

Weak spark + 1988 ford bronco

check the voltage of the b+ terminal of the ignition coil (primary side) with a cheap multimeter while cranking. low voltage to the primary will cause low voltage on the secondary. also recheck all ground paths from the ignition module. ensure good connection from coil to module. note: new parts are not "known good parts" until it runs.--> IG.MOD.
