Sounds like it maybe is the electric fan and or relay not kicking in. Do you have a/c in this vehicle? If so, let vehicle sit running, and watch tempature. Fan should come on. If not, turn on a/c to see if fan kicks on. Can possibly be temp sensor.

It really does overheat a lot when in traffic.

You need to check youe water pump, thermostat and your radiator cap and if all of that is good it sounds like a blown headgasket.

2002 corolla randomly overheats and feels like it misfires turn the heat on and engine cools down. already replaced thermostat any ideas. no leaks 98k miles

Check for collapsing (soft) coolant hose on intake side of waterpump at engine above idle rpm.
Check condition of system pressure cap.
Check operation of cooling fan/s- fan temperature sensor switch on engine may be faulty.
Check system has correct fill of coolant and no air locks exist when re-filling- bleed off any airlocks as may be necessary.
Check radiator coolant core not blocked.

I have a 1993 toyota corolla. when i am siting in traffic the engine idling as the car gets warmer the check engine light comes on. but the car runs just fine. any suggestions.

depending upon the actual temperature, you could have a cooling fan either not operating or coming on late, a low coolant level , a partially opening thermostat or partially obstructed radiator (external or internal) It seems that you are presently operating on the "edge"of an overheat...do not let it go that far before finding the problem or you will have a far larger one.

1993 Toyota Tercel overheating when driving only

Make sure the radiator is clear of debris
Try a different coolant. Stay away from the Red stuff
When changinging the thermostant go for a 180 or less. It sounds like your thermostat open when it really heats up. Get a lower thermostat.
