Start by making sure you have spark to the spark plugs. If not you may have a problem with the plug wires or coil. It's also possible you're not getting gas to the engine possibly from a faulty fuel pump.
If you change the fuel pump be sure to replace the fuel filter also.

Be careful not to overheat the starter motor, a few cranks then let it rest for half a minute.

Make sure battery has a full charge. If it cranks good but won't start, check the basics. Have a helper crank it while you visually check for spark at the spark plugs, if spark everywhere, use a gage and check proper fuel pressure. I looked at info for the 3.8L engine, 35--40 psi. Also, after you build fuel pressure, turn off the key, see if fuel pressure holds for a bit? If the pressure drops like a rock, check for fuel pressure leak. Check the vac line for fuel pressure regulator, if it has gas in it, the regulator is faulty, or a leaking fuel injector. The pressure could also drain back through fuel pump.
Also, check fuel injector pulse, engine cranking. Any applicable trouble codes?
Smell of the crankcase oil dipstick, if it smells like gas, either you don't change oil and filter very often or the engine is running very rich for some reason.

The 1991 mitsubishi did not have fancy anti theft just a starter imbolizercheck the battery make sure it can crank and the light can you light turn on and does the horn work? If you want to defeat it you will need a toothpick this is only if it is the starter relay at fault take the key out of the ignition put in neutral someone in the car to step on the brake just in case you do this in gear and it runs you over. Find the starter relay it in thhe engine fuse box location take the cover off the relay and expose the switch put it back in its socket collapse the relay and it should crank the starter now if this is a stick have the helper step on the clutch it should crank, now have them put the key on collapse the starter relay key on stpe on the slutch the car should start warm it up and turn it off get that tooth pick make the relay collapse start the car

95 dodge ram 1500 with 5.9 engine new coil, crank, cam, computer and wires and plugs only turns over wont start

Hi,here's what you need to do to find out the cause of your problem, and get your car back on the road.
  • Make sure that you have enough gas in your car. This sounds like common sense but many people don't think to check this before wondering why their car won't start. Try to refill your tank when it is no less than one quarter full, or you risk getting stalled or stuck somewhere.
  • Verify that the battery has a full charge. A battery with a low or partial charge can cause the engine to crank too slow preventing it from starting. Sometimes a jump will fix this problem, but if your battery is more than five years old you should consider replacing it, especially if winter is only a few months away.
  • Check to see if your fuel pump is turning on. This can easily be done by putting your key in the ignition, turning it to the "on" position, and listening carefully with your ear pointed toward the back seat. If your fuel pump is working you will here an electric "whirring" noise for about 2 seconds every time you cycle the key on and off. If you hear nothing then your fuel pump is faulty or not getting any power.
  • Find out if the engine is getting gas to it. Sometimes a plugged fuel filter or a problem with the fuel injectors can prevent the engine from getting any gasoline. To check this remove the air cleaner and smell inside the throttle body or air cleaner housing. If the engine is getting enough gas you should be able to sense a strong gasoline smell due to the amount of uncombusted fuel left inside the intake manifold.
  • Determine whether the spark plugs are firing. If there is plenty of gas but no spark, the engine will crank but not start. Unplug one of the spark plug wires and plug in a spark tester. Have a friend get in the car and crank the engine while you watch to see if the spark tester illuminates. You can usually purchase a spark tester at an auto parts store for about ten dollars.

Car wont stsrt

will the engine crank when you turn the key, and will not start or does nothing happen when key is turned on. If nothing happens when you turn the key, you may have an dead battery. if it will crank and not start, may not be getting fuel or the engine isnt fireing. Check fuel first, then check to see if it the spark plugs are getting fire.

1996 Sentra wont start. Replaced the battery. Turns over strong. Smells like it has fuel. Previous owner just replaced spark plug wires and distributor. Any suggestions?

If you smell fuel, there is a chance that the engine is 'flooded' and fuel has wet the plugs. You can dry it out to some extent by pushing the accelerator slowly to the floor and holding it there while you crank the engine. If it still won't start (or at least fire a couple of times) then you may not have any spark to drown. If it does sputter a little, continue holding the pedal down and continue cranking to see if the other cylinders will follow. It's time to pull a plug wire, place it on the block or other grounded surface and have someone crank it to see if there is any spark at all. If not, there are too many things that could prevent it so you may have to have the computer scanned to see what might have failed.

2000 Dakota 3.9 V6 wont start just cranks, has plenty of fuel

I agree that it's probably the Crankshaft Position Sensor (CPS).  Without the pulse from this sensor, you vehicle will never start.  Sometimes water from a leaking water pump will run down onto this sensor and cause it to fail.
You can go to MSN Auto for your vehicle and under the "Reliability" tab  you will see the same thing regarding the CPS (listed under Engine issues).
