I had put anti freeze and water into the overflow tank meant for coolant, and a day later it all turned into thick orange muck. How do i empty out the tank and put more anti-freeze in?
do I have to put a new tank in or should I just clean the old one out and re-assemble?do I have to put a new tank in or should I just clean the old one out and re-assemble?

most probably a failed/split transmission cooler in the radiator tank
If that is the case , the fix is a new radiator and a chemical flush of the radiator
get quotes from an accredited radiator shop after getting a proper diagnosis of the fault
Generally now there is a plastic overflow tank, where you do this, and not into the radiator top neck. The cap there is usually not meant to be routinely removed. There will be a hose about 1/2" diameter from the side of the radiator top neck to the overflow/filler tank. Just follow that.
white smoke is caused by-- water or anti-freeze entering cylinder . if in radiator or the overflow tank. it will look like a chocolate milk shake. check on oil dipstick for traces of water or anti-freeze. also, a bad head gasket will let water or anti-freeze in combustion area. head gasket symtoms if bad. Symptom #1: Chronic Engine Overheating Symptom #2: Significant Drop in Coolant Level Symptom #3: Mixing of Coolant and Engine Oil Symptom #4: White Smoke from Exhaust Pipe popping of overflow cap Symptom #6: Air Bubbles in Radiator Symptom #7: Engine Lacks Power GOOD-DAY!
IT DEPENDS SOME OLDERS CARS USE GREEN ANTIFREEZE.MOST NEWER VECHICLE USE DEXCOOL ORANGE ANTIFREEZE.YOU NEED TO LOOK UP TO SEE WHAT TYPE ANTIFREEZE VECHICLE USE BEFORE PUTTING ANY IN SYSTEM.IF YOUR CAP SAY COOLANT THEN THATS WHERE YOUR ANTIFREEZE GOES.
under the hood you will see a plastic tank with a black lid.. it should have a coolant word or symbol.. this is where you add water and antifreeze mix, depending on your region as to the percentage of water and antifeeze
Wait til the car is cold and then open the cap on the RADIATOR by pushing it down while twisting. The coolant must be filled to the brim. Replace the cap and then fill the overflow tank to the "cold" mark. Use a 50/50 mixture of water and coolant.
Open the radiator drain plug and let out as much coolant as will drain';
Replace drain plug and refill the sytem with distilled water
Run the engine for for few minutes until it is warm (not hot);
Repeat steps #3, #4 and #5 until you've effectively replace all of the
coolant with distilled water. You'll know your finished draining the system
when only clear water drains out.
Drain the system one last time (now only residual distilled water should
be in your cooling system);
**** out all the coolant in the overflow tank (I use a Turkey baster or a
huge syringe with a short length of rubber tubing.)
Replace the radiator drain plug.
Add undiluted anti-freeze to the system;
Run the engine to mix the distilled water already in the cooling system
with the newly added antifreeze.
Check the antifreeze/water concentration with a tester.
Over the next few days, adjust to the desired antifreeze/water mixture
over the next several days. You'll likely have to **** out a little coolant
mixture from the fill cap to create room for either the distilled water or the
anit-freeze you'll be adding to adjust to the desired concentration.
Sometimes I adjust by adding either water or antifreeze to the coolant-
overflow tank which utimately mixes with the engine coolant;
Don't forget to add collant and/or water to the coolant overflow tank.
Always fill you radiator & resevoir with a 50/50 mix of coolant / water. Your vehicle should have dexcool which is a red/orange colored coolant. You can buy a universal equivalent which is premixed and is yellow (not green). It is safe to add universal coolant but not green antifreeze. Premixed (it will say on jug) would be your safe bet. Fill the radiator, add to overflow tank to full cold line, run vehicle until fully warmed up. Let cool back down & then recheck. Don't forget to check for leaks....it is not normal to have your coolant get that low. You likely are leaking coolant.
If this helps please rate me! You can do it. Brett
