Question about 1982 Ford F 250

1 Answer

I have an 1982 f 250 4.9 and go through carburaters a lot. New ones last may be a year then start burnning way to much gas. The carb has an idle adjustment and a curb idle adjustment no air gas mixture setting screw. What is the right carb for my truck?

1982 ?? their wouldnt be any adjustment as they are fixed jet carbs ,you could try fitting new jets but whats causing them to eat away in the first place i dont know unless its the fuel additive that you have to add to the unleaded fuel

The van will start, but have to push pedal to the floor, once it starts it will idle great but dumps a lot of gas into the carb., once you push down on the pedal it dies.

carb problem sounds like choke is stuck or float is stuck remove cover and air cleaner and watch operation when starting see if choke blade is open or shut on carb and if shut watch to see if it opens when u let it idle. if not choke pull off solenoid is bad. if working tap on carb to free float.if that don't work carb may need to be rebuilt or get new one .

As gasoline sits idle for that length of time, it turns into shellac.
this in turn plugs up the orifices in the carb, use a good quality carb cleaner, or fuel injector cleaner as the case maybe. follow the directions carefully. You may have to do this a couple of times.
Good Luck

1997 Eldorado carborator installation

Actually it should be very simple... There are 4 Nuts on the carburater which you can loosen. There are some linkages from Carb to the gas pedal, Choke...They need to be remove.. but do it as to remember how to put it back when installing a new one.
Now make sure they give you a new fiber/asbestos gasket. This is important.. If it leaks... you will not get good gas milage
once the carb is on.. tighten all 4 nuts, do not overtight them, but tighten them

the air fuel adjustment has little to do with what u have going on, but here is what u do, make sure the engine is at normal operating temp temperature (at least 185F) then verify idle speed is set to spec +or- 50 RPM, then turn the carb mixture adjusment screw in until the idle speed starts to drop off, then turn it back out until the idle speed increases to its highest point (u will need a hand held tachometer), when u have reached the highest idle turn the idle screw back in 1/4 trun, that is lean best idle.

Van had been started but not ran for approx.7 months. started ok let idle for 15/20 mins. shut off like out of gas but was not. would not restart until next morning. started with gas pedal to the floor....

You don't want to start throwing money at this thing without knowing what the problem really is; Yes, it could be a module or a coil, but it probably isn't. Electronic parts don't usually suffer from idleness, fuel systems do. The first clue is that it sat for 7 months and then ran for fifteen seconds. The fix's you try first for are the cheap ones. I would suspect a fuel problem; gas doesn't like to sit around for 7 months. Does the van have a carb or is it fuel injected? Carbs can varnish up from gas sitting in them; spraying carb cleaner in and around them will often loosen things up, in a worst case it'll have to come off the motor and be rebuilt. If the gas tank was low on gas for that seven months you'll probably have a lot of condensation in it. Water doesn't burn, so that'll keep it from starting and running, a couple of cans of Heet (isopropyl achohol) will usually fix that. If there's dirt in the system, the fuel filter will probably need to be changed. If those things don't help, you'll find it much less frustrating and usually cheaper to tow it to a reputable shop. They'll fix it right the first time.
