I have checked all of the above. The one thing that concerns me is that I am unable to determine if I should replace the pressure regulator (100.00) or the fuel pump (190.00) first to determine the solution, I do not have access to test equipment for checking the operation of these two items.

Are you sure you getting fuel even though you have new fuel filter, check all fuses under the dash to fuel pump and relay under the hood, are you getting sparks? check rotor, cap, coil...make sure you getting 2 important items, gas and fuel to the engine. hope that help some

I agree with you and not wanting to spend and wast money on parts which not needing to replace if it not broken. Keep in mind in the future saving money, those expensive parts, I don't recommend buying new if you cant get away buying one from a junk yard for less than half and they will guarantee it if its doesn't work. to test the fuel pump, is to find the fuel line under the hood which attach to the main filter by removing the line from the filter. This is my home design testing to see if fuel pump is working properly. go down to discount auto parts and purchase 6'-8' long gas line same diameter to your car gas line which will cost you 50 cent/foot and buy a cheap plastic see through gas filter and you going to attached the gas line you have purchase to the filter and the other end to the gas line so you have a joint connection between main fuel line from your fuel pump to new filter to fuel line you bought. at the other end of the fuel line you would run it to a small gas can.you may have to buy a small "C" clamp to secured the line so it does not come loose and shoot fuel everywhere. have someone crank the car while you holding the fuel line to the gas can making sure the pump is working and pumping fuel. you cant test the pressure but you can see and tell the amount of fuel if coming out of the line. that will eliminate the fuel pump. rear-ly fuel regulator goes bad, if it does it does not keep your car from starting and idling, you just wont have any power during your acceleration. the only way to test the fuel regulator is buy connecting the line from the regulator with a pressure tester and i don't have a home design for that one.

How about the fuel pump...are you getting the fuel to the cylinders? Is the fuel making it through the fuel line through the fuel filter? Drop a few drops in 1 cylinder, if it fires, you have a fuel problem. Does it turn over? If not check out the motor starter!

2001 Toyota Tacoma keeps stalling on start up.

Check the battery cables. I had the same issues with my 96 tacoma, The battery cable connection at the battery can be cranked down but still be loose. Hard to explain, doesn't make sense, but just check it out.

Car was parked and running and just killed on its own and will not start. does this sound like the fuel pump or maybe fuel filter?

If the battery is strong and charged, starter is fine, car ran okay while getting progressively worse until it died and won't restart now, might be fuel filter or pump. I've dealt with two cars with fuel filter issues. Both would idle fine, but run progessively worse under load and eventually die and not start although everything else checked out. Engine turned fast enought to start, battery strong, alternator fine, air cleaner clean, all that. No start. Changed fuel filters and done. Everything back to normal. Both cars were about model year 1990 (1989 and 1991). Replaced one in a parking lot and car fired right back up and powered on home just fine, whereas the week leading up to it it ran worse and worse, hesitated on acceleration and finally would die if you hit the gas. Fuel filter may be in engine compartment. Looks like a canister with an in and an out for fuel. Pump is in gas tank and is way more work and money. Good luck, hope this helps.
