eng.temp.coolant sensor, located on thermostat housing,if u think sensor is defect, this check will make engine light come on,unplug elect. connection on sensor while car is idling, cooling fan will start up within 1 min.if it doesnt check fans power circuit.or apply batt.voltage directly to fan to see if fan will work.

My 1987 Chevrolet Z24 Cavalier cooling fan will

since you have already tested fan and relay and both work, the problem may be the engine temp sensor. There are two sensors. One goes to instument cluster. This is engine coolant temp sensor, the other is engine temp sensor which is usually attached to engine block, sometimes they are connected to thermostat housing with the coolant sensor. You can pully the engine temp sensor and test that sensor same way as relay. (with mulitimeter)

First check to see if the cooling fans on the radiator are working, You should be able to hear them from outside the car. Try turning on the a/c that should automatically make them come on. If they do not then you have a power loss to them. Check the relay under the hood by taking a small jumper wire and touching the terminals inside the plug going to the relay. If the fans run then the relay is bad. If they dont then it is possable that the cooling sensor is bad. Good luck. dont forget to rate.
