Check fuel pressure/volume and the fuel filter. Does it take longer to crank to run ?

  • Randy Sep 17, 2015

When it's cold it fires up and sputters then dies but got use to the in the mornings. Today when it quit on me it'd fire up but sputter and pop thru intake

Something is leaning it out. Low fuel pressure or low volume can cause this but a vacuum leak can too. Check the intake for leaking gaskets while running by carefully spraying carb cleaner or even WD40 or water on the edges of the intake and throttle body. It should smooth out if a leak is there and seals with liquid sprayed on it.

Sounds like tune up time. New spark plugs, wires and the fuel filter may need to be changed.

I'll try plugs them and wires are only about year old. The wires are pretty new looking still and fuel filter is about 2 months old

  • Randy Sep 17, 2015

Ok update on truck. Was gonna change plugs and fuel filter aha just in case. But how ever was on my way to work today and spit an sputtered as ever other morning then started running a lil better. About half way to work she fell on her face. Like fuel was cut from it then had a hard time keeping her running couldn't hardly get RPM's up over 1 and a half. Had to limp it to a spot to sit to I get off work. Bit while I was waiting for wife to pick me up. I kept trying to get it to build up power but it just wouldn't do it. It barely stayed running at an idle. Starting to think possible fuel pump. Any suggestions?

These engines had the spider fuel injection assembly and were prone to problems like this. If it does not want to crank now spray some carb or throttle body cleaner into the throttle body while trying to crank it. Be careful as it is flammable. Post back

It does sound like fuel. I needs at least 55 psi. You need to know exactly what the fuel pressure is.

Check spark to plugs. Possible crankshaft position sensor. Located at rear of engine between engine and trans.

SOURCE: Having problems with 2002 Chevy Silverado staying

It's hard to figure out whats going on with out any codes. Im thinking maybe the fuel pump. To check it after it stops and doe'snt start squirt some starting fluid into the carb and see if it wants to start. If it trys to start then it's a fuel problem.

SOURCE: 1991 chevy cavalier- stopped running going down

Sounds Like you have a defected pump. Or the wires to it may have gotten pinched. The fuse is showing you an over load. DUE TO FIRE !!!
( Don't use a over size fuse it can start a fire! )
You are going to need to start by dropping the tank. Check all wires around the tank. You are looking for bare wires. Then remove fuel pump check all wires going in to tank & wires in the tank. Now with fuel pump out check the wires on the fuel pump.
Now you that you have checked the wire and all are were good take the fuel pump back and tell them what is going on. They should test it.

The carb throat needs to be cleaned. You can pay chev $400 or do it yourself for under $10. Just get a can of cleaning solvent at the parts house and follow the directions on the can.

if it shuts off after running for a while and will not restart for about 10 min,a bad crank sensor will cause this. abad crank sensor will make car shut off and not restart for about 10 min. put a scanner on to make sure. a check engine light does not allways come on. if you do not have a scanner, any auto parts store will scan it for free.
