Question about 2002 Ford Escape
The noise could be either the A/C clutch, or the harmonic balancer. with the engine off and the car keys in your pocket ( for safety reasons). raise the hood, look down and find the a/c compressor, use your finger and see if you can spin anything on the compressor easily. If so you need a new a/c clutch and probably the pulley also. These can be change on the vehicle, but it takes time. Have a mechanic check it out for sure, just to be safe.
