Question about 1992 Saturn SL2

1 Answer

1996 Saturn SL2 - No response from starter - over past 3 days it has been intermitant - all lights from ignition switch but no response from starter - In 100 attempts, it has started 3 times - Battery is good - also tried with a jump - no slow crank, no grind of solenoid, no click, click click - do you think its the starter or the ignition switch

I pulled the starter and took to Kragen for testing. The electronic module of the starter (solenoid?) was loose within it's metal shroud. The starter passed the bench test - but I bought the new anyway since the Solenoid appeared shakey at best. The new starter unit fixed the problem. Thank you for your assistance.

I have a 2002 GMC Envoy and it won't start. The starter solenoid clicks, power to dash, tapped on starter and solenoid and that didn't work, I am thinking it is the ignition switch under the dash, any ideas?

It would be hard to guess but a simple diagnostic would be to use a 12v test light and see if the starter solenoid recieves a 12 v signal while turning the key. If it lights, the starter should turn over. This also gives you the oportunity to check and verify all electrical connections at the starter including the large orange fusible link wire at the large battery terminal.

1999 SL2 engine just suddenly dies while vehicle is in motion at various speeds and intervals of distance. (.3 to 1.5 mi ) Just recently began fix-up on this car. Standard ignition tune-up, wires, plugs,...

I had 4 saturns, a bad crank sensor mounted in the block behind the starter was the fix which matched your problem. When you get the starter out, replace it too as you will not want to go in there again.

I have a 1991 Saturn SL2 (SOHC) that I'm trying to get going. Replaced most of the fuel system which is good now. Tried to start and got a click sound. I assumed it was the starter. Took the starter off...

The SL2 is a DOHC, the SL1 is a SOHC. You have put more money into it already than it is worth. Seems like a free check of the crankshaft being locked up might have been a first move before expending money. There were several small improvements made to the Saturn after 91, the fist year. I would suggest looking around for a 95 where your new parts will still swap in, possibly even a 96. You can get one for less than $500 if you look around. Stay away from automatic transmissions in Saturns.

On my 93 saturn sl2 in order for the car to crank and start i have to turn the right turn signal on. If i do this it starts every time. Do i have to replace the whole ignition blinker and light cluster?

Have you done any wiring changes in your car recently? There should be no interaction between the turn signal switch and the starter switch. You do not need to replace your light cluster. In fact, I don't think you have a problem with your turn signal switch, unless, of course, the turn signals do not work. Do you have access to an electrical schematic and a voltmeter?

2002 saturn sl2 will not start for no apparant reason then 1 to 3 days later starts, while trying it 2-3 times a day. Towed to a garage both times and they could find nothing wrong.

Why couldn't they find anything wrong? The main componants should be tested first. (the starter, srarter relay, any related wiring, ignition switch, and all connections at battery, relay, fuse, starter, and eng. block). Good luck.
