There are two possibilities to consider:

  1. the master cylinder is leaking/by-passing hydraulic fluid
  2. the slave cylinder is leaking/by-passing fluid
You didn't mention a fluid leak, so that would eliminate the obvious cause of a leaking pipe. However, check for leaks around the master cylinder (on the firewall) and at the front of the engine by the clutch itself. This would indicate which of the two might be the problem, If they haven't been replaced in many years, it's probably sensible to replace both at once. The slave cylinder can be replaced without removing the engine. If you have ABS, you'll likely need to loosen/remove the alternator.

Good luck!

Clutch is not engaging. Where do you check to fluid level? and what type of fluid do I use?

If a clutch is not engaging, you do not have a fluid problem. The clutch mechanism is only used to DISENGAGE the clutch.
If the clutch does not engage, you probably have a worn or damaged clutch plate. If that's the case, either the engine or transmission must be removed so that the clutch can be replaced.

Where is the transmission fluid located? how to get a manual for free?

There is a transmission dip stick on the side of the engine, this is used to check the trans fluid level. The engine oil dipstick has a large diameter plastic cap, and is on the left/driver's side of the car (in North America); the trans dipstick has two notches at the bottom when removed and a label telling the fluid to use. 1993 Saab 900 - need to change the clutch

You can change the clutch yourself, if your pretty mechanical. It's at the front of the engine, so you don't remove engine or trans. However, you'll need to remove the hood, as it's much easier to work from the front with it off, and the left rad fan as it's in the way. Might remove rad if you want lots of space! The best source of info on this car is the "Bentley Bible" aka the Saab 900 Official Service Manual, costs about $40 from Amazon!16 valve manual: http://www.amazon.com/Saab-900-Valve-Service-Manual/dp/08376031378 valve manual :http://www.amazon.com/Eight-Official-Service-Manual-1981-1988/dp/0837603102get the appropriate manual for your car and enjoy the Saab!If this helps, please give a "thumbs up", thankssaabreur

Has info on just about every thing, including shifter. You didn't say whether yours is manual or auto. You could source a used shifter from your local Saab specialist or local junk yard, though there aren't too many Saabs at the wreckers; a good sign!

96 Saab 900 Clutch Cable: Manual vs Self-Adjusting

just get the manually adjustable one. I just replaced mine today and I have a 96 900SE. the new clutch feels better and you only have to adjust it when the pedal has alot of "slack". that means that the pedal can be depressed about and inch before it starts operating the cable. anything more than an inch needs adjustment

1988 Saab 900 8v Cannot locate transmission fluid checkfill point

multi-part answer!
one fan is for A/C cooling, other is for radiator. Neither come on until engine is warm. (Check the Townsend saabmaster site at http://townsendimports.com/Web/entry/tech_doc_systems.htm for reasons why you should use low temp fan switch and thermostat)

The auto trans dip stick IS in the front, by the ignition coil. For more positive identification it should have two notches at the bottom, on opposite sides, and a label attached at the top indicating the fluid type to use. Fill between them is about 1/2 litre.
