Possible pinion brg is bad. Have the oil drained and check for metal. Drag a magnet through the oil if it isn't outright noticeable.

I'm having trouble locating the starter on my 1990 volvo 740 gl. where is it located and how do i replace it?

As you are facing the car, it is on your right hand side - low on the engine - toward the rear of the car. To remove, 1) remove the positive battery cable 2) jack the drivers side front of the car up 3) from above or below, remove all electrical connectors

Fuel Delvery

you really need to test fuel pressure/did you replace filter under car/you should also replace fuel regulator on top frt of eng./but most likely the fuel pump has moved on the mounting bracket and allowing fuel to leak back into the tank (low pressure)
