Question about Isuzu Trooper

1 Answer

One week ago while on the freeway my 88' Isuzu trooper 2 4cylinder 2.6l F.I. began running rough, I stepped on the gas a little which led to detonation like I have never heard before,I slowed to about 55mph and then the det. got worse and then it stumbled hard and a steam cloud the size of Hiroshima came out of the tailpipe. I thought for sure it was going to just shut down/ overheat etc., however it got me home about another 6mi., it did not overheat!!.The next day I flushed the cooling system and put Blue Devil head gasket sealant in it.After the 50min idle process and a quick test drive the radiator had not lost any water, there is no coolant in the oil and the oil cap has no evidence of foaming. It runs rough down below 1500rpm and at 900rpm It seems as if it is only running on 3cyl. however up above 2000rpm in 3rd 4th 5th gear it runs just as smooth as it always has with no loss in power,I changed plugs, wires, cap, engine oil-filter,checked for vacumn leaks.Could compressing that much coolant in the #2 and #3 cylinders have caused valve, piston, ring, connecting rod damage, also there is a dime sized pool of engine oil in the throttle body and oil is coming out of hoses that attach to the inlet hose just ahead of the throttle body, could the hot coolant, steam inside the combustion chambers have wiped out the valve stem seals, the second set of NGK plugs I put in are not oil fouled and is it possible this is the sole culprit of my rough idle?.Thank you for your time, any help would be greatly appreciated. Sincerely John Lindstrom

I appreciate your honesty and I do believe you are probably correct about the coolant wiping out the cylinder ring seal, however that does not account for the excessive engine oil in the throttle body and the two crankcase hoses which connect to the air intake tube ahead of the throttle body and there is also oil in hose which runs from the screw-in pcv valve to the F.I. plenum. It may be coincedence, but something is wrong with crankcase ventilation. Call me crazy but before I go and buy a $50 or $60 dollar compression tester which I do not own I am going to replace a $3 or $4 dollar pcv valve and check the plugs again. I let you know what happens, again thank you for your time. I very much appreciate your professional opinion. Sincerely John Lindstrom

I AM A DEALER TRAINED ISUZU TECH AND I WILL TELL U THIS, THE PROBLEM U HAVE IS THE HEAD GASKET, THAT SEALER U PUT IN WILL WORK FOR A VERY SHORT TIME AND ALTHOUGH IT HAS STOPPED THE MAJORITY OF THE COOLANT ENTERING THE CYLINDER IT HAS NOT ELIMINATED IT, THE OIL PROBLEM IS CAUSED BY THE RINGS/CYLINDER WALL BEING WASHED OUT BY THE LARGE AMOUNT OF COOLANT GETTING INTO THE HOT COMBUSTION CHAMBER, YOU NEED TO CHECK THE COMPRESSION ON ALL FOUR, THERE SHOULD NOT BE MORE THAN A 5% DIFFERENCE BETWEEN HIGHEST AND LOWEST READING ON ANY OF THE 4 CYLINDERS, SO IF THE HIGHEST COMPRESSION READS 150 PSI LETS SAY THEN THE LOWEST MUST NOT BE LOWER THAN 142 PSI, AFTER THAT THE ENGINE WILL BEGIN TO MISS AND RUN ROUGH AT IDLE, AT A 10% LOSS YOU WILL HAVE A VERY PRONOUNCED MISS-FIRE. RUN THE COMPRESSION TEST, DO IT TWICE TO CONFIRM THE READINGS ARE ACCURATE AND THEN REPAIR AS NECESSARY, HEAD GASKET RINGS ECT. ONE LAST NOTE A LEAKING HEAD GASKET WILL NOT HURT THE VALVE SEALS AND THE SEALS ARE VERY UNLIKELY THE SOURCE OF THAT MUCH OIL ENTERING THE CYLINDER.

on the oil, if you have allot of cyl compression leaking by the piston rings then the crankcase gets pressure in it and blows the oil up through the vent hose, just make sure the PCV system is no restricted, excess crankcase pressure and a plugged PCV are the only two thing that cause this oil issue, both problems cause the same thing, excessive crankcase pressure.

I have 01 trooper replaced gas cap now check engine light off, but I have a p0300 code will it pass smog.?.

Many states will not pass a vehicle with a check engine light.

The P03000 code you have has little to do with the gas cap, rather it is a random misfire code. read more about this code and possible fixes in the link below. Good luck!

Hi,
Looks like no fuel goes into the cylinder when your starting it up.
Better have your carburetor check by a technician, it needs to be cleaned out to unblock the small jettings in the primary chamber inside the carb.
Try to hand choke it just to loosen up the dirt inside( run the engine and rev it while your hand chocking ).
Hope that helps you out.
Thanks for asking FixYa!

Engine Flutter in 95 Trooper

If it was mine I would get as much of the old fuel out of the tank as I could.(syphon or look at tank for a drain plug)Change the fuel filter.Fill it with fresh fuel.Add a bottle of (Red color) STP fuel treatment. This will help remove condensation form the tank. Also check the condition of the air filter and install a fresh set of spark plugs, properly gaped.
The octaine in you old gas gets weak. Its not good to let it sit for so long.
I hope this helps you.

98 Isuzu Trooper stalls on cold start, idle issues..

I had the same issue on my 99 Trooper.

It would usually start when completely cold, but idle around 2k RPM.
It would drive fine. But if I shut it down, ran into a store, and came back out, it would start but immediately idle.
Had to ride the gas a little to get it into gear.
The Check Engine light has been going on and off for 6 months or so.

I took this to my local trusted repair shop (no Isuzu dealers within 200 miles).
The diagnosed the light, and found that the Intake Gaskets were bad or leaking.
The idling problem was related to the car not being able to control the amount of air coming in.

They replaced the Intake gaskets by the next day, and I haven't had a problem since. And no more check engine light, which has been on half a year.

Here's some details from my bill:
(1) Intake Gasket set $107.95
Misc materials $21.00
2.1 hours of Labor

The total cost to me was $345.00, and I definately don't feel gipped.
