A sensor may have been pushed out of place. check behind each rotor to ensure that all sensors are about 1/16 inch away from ring.
Or just tell the mech that did the brakes to fix what he broke.

Abs light staying on

The ABS light comes on when there is a malfuntion in the ABS system, not when the brakes are low. On a Ford you more than likely have a dirty sensor or pick up ring on the back side of the rotor. And no you do not have to change the rear drum brakes when changing your front pads but they should be inspected.
Usually you will change 2-3 sets of front pads before the rears need to be changed.

2004 ford explorer abs light constant and 4x4 blinking any ideas?

According to the manual pg 10. http://www.fordservicecontent.com/Ford_Content/catalog/owner_guides/04expog3e.pdf
Anti-lock brake system: If the ABS light stays illuminated or
continues to flash, a malfunction has been detected, have the system
serviced immediately. Normal braking is still functional unless the brake warning light also is illuminated.

I stopped a little short in my ford van and the abs light came on steady. i hear the motor running or something in the abs system. after 1 hr driving this way, the noise stopped, the bread light came on...

I think you could make it home, but to be on the safe side. FIRST check the normal breaking while just starting to move to make sure your brakes function normally. You your brake system may be overheated and needs to cool down for a few minutes. The ABS (Anti-Lock Braking) system is a unit that rapidly pumps the brakes with a rapid pulse. That function is now absent and you most likely now have regular functioning brakes with no ABS. IN A SAFE AREA start very slowly in low gear and push on the brakes to see how the vehicle stops. If that is good. Try it again at higher speed. You will immediately know if your Brakes are working. If so, drive home. NOTE: There is a back up brake system in all cars that works but requires a lot of pressure applied to the brakes. That is there as a safety measure.
It's most likely you DO NOT have ABS. It appears as though the switch that turns on the ABS automatically in a short stop Stayed on. This would have made the pulsing ABS unit motor continue to work until it:
a) burned out. or
b) burned out the fuse wire that leads to it.So, in effect, it was pulsing your brakes whether you needed it or not.
The smell was likely your brakes being over used.
Get this checked out immediately. I just did a quick search and there has been a massive Ford Recall concerning ABS systems for many of the Ford Vehicles including the E-150s
I hope this helps,
Best Regards,
Mark

1996 Ford Explorer XLT abs light comes on on

The ABS light is for the Anti-lock Braking System. The MIL will illuminate if there is a difference in wheel speed sensors signals to the PCM. So you might have a wheel speed sensor that is going out on you. Does the light come on at low speeds, or just higway speeds? You could take the vehicle to a local parts store and have them pull the codes for you and that will tell you which speed sensor is out of whack. Also road grime, dirt and gunk buildup can cause speed sensors to give false readings. Hope tihs helps you out.......

In the pumpkin of the rear end there is an abs sensor. This might be bad or loose wiring at this point due to out in the open.
