Question about 1994 Jeep Grand Cherokee

I'm trying to find out if it has a 4 or 6 cylinder engine. I recently purchased my jeep, and found that it has a VERY difficult climbing the hills where I live. It tops out at 35 MPH on steep inclines

Well there is usually stickers for climate control and emissions as well as engine info. usually on bottom corner it will say 4.0L which is the 6 cylinder engine or something of that nature and spark plug gap listed also. just research what litre engine is after that or count how many wires got to cylinder or coilpacks. Limited or Grand Cherokee is usually a 8 cylinder I believe.

Very simple....count the number of spark plug wires you have going to the motor...that is the number of cylinders you have...

4 Cylinder...you have one valve cover

6 Cylinder...you have two.

2001 jeep grand cherokee...only when vehicle is climbing a hill and downshifts the check engine light comes on and when I scan it, error code p0304 comes up...it's happened twice now and both times I got...

that code is for a misfire cyl #4 , may not be noticable as engine revving at change down , as a first step i'd try a fuel addative , get one that covers the catalytic convertor as well as the injectors, valves cylinders etc. take for a longish run (50-100) miles at a highish speed to get the engine to a good operating temperature ,keep me posted if you wish , don't forget to clear the code before you try addative

I was driving up a hill and the car needed more power it would downshift and the rpm were really high and engine was loud. then I hit another hill and engine was loud at it jumped to 4,000 rpms and di

Sounds pretty normal for a 4 cylinder car, if that is what you have. It could also be considered to be normal for a 6 cylinder car. The cars with the smaller motors are designed to downshift in high load situations such as steep hill climbing. This is to compensate for lack of torque. It keeps the motor in it's power band so you have the power to climb the hill.

I seriously wonder why Jeep used that engine at all. We have several Jeeps here and the only one I hear nearly every week about power and hill climbing problems is the one with the 4cyl. (same year as yours).
Adding a taller tire is definitely not a plus. No idea what your gear ratio is but lets say you have 3:73's...with a tire two inches taller, the actual final ratio is around 3:23. Put the small engine up against it and you have about as much grade or hill climbing ability as a ride on mower!
There are three practical ways of getting back some performance. The first is simply putting a lower tire on it. Second would be to replace the stock camshaft with one with a better torque curve, perhaps adding headers and an aftermarket intake system as well. Third would be to change both gear sets to something in a 4 series (expensive). Then, you have two even more expensive options: Put a 4.0 engine and all that goes with it into the vehicle or start playing with turbocharging.(you really need to know what you're doing to do that right).
Your last option is regardless of how much you like your Jeep, sell it and get one with a 4,0 already installed!!!

My 01 passat 1.8t has an idle misfire and trouble climbing hills i found a busted hose and replaced it and that lessened the problem i need help.

A misfire can be caused by a bad plug, wire, or coil or coil pack. Or, it could be caused by a clogged injector. Or, there could be mechanical wear on the engine that prevents the engine from firing on all 4 cylinders with authority.

Good luck on this repair.

P301 Code on 2001 Ford Taurus SOHC (not FFL) with 253K miles. Replaced plugs and wires with Bosch Platinum +4 plugs and Motorcraft wire set. P301 returned almost immediately. Engine performance extremely...

Coil pack should in the front top of motor, with engine running remove one spark plug wire at a time from coil pack ( careful not to get shock ) they should all have spark, if one don't replace coil pack.

Power loss at 4000 rpm

anything over 4K is pretty much above the useful torque curve of the engine. Therefore more rpm's will not do you as much good as you might think. If you intend to do any hill-climbing, you will need to begin by changing both front and rear gearsets (if you have say, 3:23's, go to 4:11's etc) You will also need to do some engine mods such as a different camshaft, headers etc. (this will alter torque curve)
Factory gears are generally installed to accommodate a certain region where the vehicle was originally sold. If the region is flat, then the gears will not work well in high terrain.
If you are not hill climbing and just have occasional problems with hills, There isn't really much you can do about it especially if you have a four cylinder in there. One thing though is that if you have oversized tires, get rid of them...they change your final drive ratio and definitely will influence your performance.

4 wheel drive doesnt work.

Has this Jeep been modified at all?
It sounds like the shifter cable was reinstalled backwards.
Specifically the 4-Low "Not Climbing Well". 4-Low should give you the best torque and hill climbing ability.
Do you feel any "Binding" in the steering wheel (difficult to turn)?
Remember a Jeep uses real driveshafts and differentials to give you 4WD - you cannot engage 4WD or 4-Low on dry hard surfaces. It needs a little bit of slip between the wheels for turns.
Check you're fluids too.

Have a scan tool put on it and see what codes come up. It sounds like a knock sensor to me, but lets get that free scan at autozone, or Pep boys & see what it says.
