Question about 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee

My 4.0 inline six has only 60.000 miles the obd light is on.when you romp on the gas it pours out the black smoke i replaced the coils an wires tps plugs all four o2 sensors. it will run but has a very rough idle running down the highway you wouldnt no theres a problem.

Have you checked the air cleaner? .The computer should be read to see what problems are indicated. It doesn't seem that you are getting very good gas mileage. Black smoke means high fuel use!

OBD 440 Error and Check Engine light ON. Already replaced new Gas Cap, Solenoid behind Gas Tank. Still the Light comes on.


Now have a repair shop do the proper testing & resolve

Diagnosed with ignition coil problem, replaced coil, spark plugs & wires, inspected pcm, vehicle running rough in gear, acceleration is rough, smooths out when it gets going. oil on one spark plug....


2006 3.9 has to be a T-Bird or LS

There are no spark plug wires

It has Coil-On-Plug individual coils

Plugs don't fail --they get changed at 60,000 miles
give or take,say every 3 years

The front (2) O2 Sensors get repalced at 100,000
miles. The ones closest to the engine

Clean MAF Sensor at least once a year

I have no idea how you inspect a pcm,if your
at home & have no scanner or PC Based Software

Egr Valves fail early on those & other fords

You could test,not look at,actually put an oscilloscope
on the TPS Sensor

Any oil on a spark plug requires a new valve cover gasket

If a coil was replaced based on a code alone,you may have
replaced a good one,not what needed to be replaced if any

Put an obd reader on and got no codes,but hitting throttle,the truck hesitates and obd shows zeros on oxygen sensors. hit the gas again and full power. my question is , is it the ECM or something...


Thats normal it generates a signal from 0.0 to 1.0 this is air sensor you dont have oxygensensor, and the problem is not the ECM either check the air filter if you havent replaced the fuel filter you will be needing one more likey you can be starving for fuel if your OBD reader has data you need to read the fuel trim of the short trim and the long trim and also be aware that todays air filter have high amount of fire retardant on it what this means for you is get a brake cleaner or carberator cleaner and clean the airflow sensor. They also sell mass air flow sensor cleaner follow the direction on the can and you will be good to go by thhe way your hesitation is mass air flow contamination

Suv stalls between 45 and 65 mph, already changed plug, wires, coil, and ran a fuel injectiong cleaner! check engine light comes on and off, reads miss fire cyl 1, 3, 5


Spark plug wires will last 20 years in most cases
Spark plugs never fail to fire,they are replaced at 60,000 miles,
not over 3 years,regardless of milage.
Injector cleaner is useless and a waste of money.
How would 10 oz in a 15 gallon fuel tank fix anything
common sense.

Now you diagnose your drivability issue
Retrieve the code,if any, that set the check light,
proceed from there.

You stated a cylinder misfire,so you already know your problem
Coil pack, Coil -On-Plug,what ever you have on your vehicle.

The stalling is another issue,unless the misfire is so bad that it
spikes the computer,comes back on the TPS Sensor and the vehicle
goes into failsafe and shuts off. Still bad coil issues.

2004 Ford Freestar 3.9 liter with 130,000 miles on it. After many failed attempts I simply cannot get this van to run right. Currently reading P2196 and P2198 O2 codes, even though I replaced them...


How about a fuel sample and new fuel filter? When the Service Engine light comes on this time, have you checked the final codes?

The throttle position sensor, TPS, could be bad with all the work done on the Butterfly flaps. No telling how many times its been removed and replaced. The black soot is a sign of unburned gas either through timing advance or too much fuel pressure for the situation. Thats the job of the TPS.

2002 camaro, v6, 81K, 5-speed, hesitates under acceleration, replaced air and fuel filter, spark plugs, acc belt, oil change within last 3K miles. Fuel pump replaced less than 15K ago, I never let tank run...


You may have too much back pressure or a blockage in the exhaust system. Have your convertor checked especially if over 100,000 kms, 60,000 miles. Good luck!

Start with checking the TPS, A bad TPS will cause this type of problem. Make sure that the wire harness is good and if it is, then good chance that the TPS will need to be replaced.

My buick regal 2003 wont excelerate it starts


It may be the throttle position sensor. You should have a check engine light on in your dash. You will need to have someone plug a OBD II reader in and retrieve the code.
You can spend a LOT of money just putting in one part after another.
Please let me know what you find.
