Question about 1993 Volvo 240

Engine cuts off

Our 1993 Volvo 240 DL has stopped running three times now. The first time we replaced the crankshaft sensor and the fuel injector sensor [no code given]. The second time we replaced the MAS air sensor [code presented with check engine light]. The price is climbing. What will we replace next? The same symptom of engine shutdown, with or without ck engine light, for all three events. This time, after about 30 minutes I cranked the engine and ran it at idle for 5 minutes before it shut off again.

If it cuts out after driving a while, one or both fuel pumps are a common culprit. After they warm up, they have a tendency to "fail" for a short while. When they cool back down, they work again. If you don't have any problems caused by lack of fuel while the car is still running, i'd suggest replacing the in-tank pump. If your car lacks power while it's running, your problem is most likely the secondary fuel pump, which provides the fuel system with the higher pressurse required for proper high speed operations. Also, do your fuel filter at the same time, to prevent other problems.

Check the relays. A worn connection could cause this.
The fuel pump relay is often the culprit.
If you try twisting the relays, gently while it's running, or while you try starting it, you may find the problem.
Hope that's it.

I have 86,000 miles on my 1993 240 Classic. What is the maintenance schedule and what should be done at this time?

Most car dealers recommend maintenance services at 30K, 60K, 90K and so on. The 30K service is mainly focused in inspection of the systems and replace of the fuel filter.
The 60K is expensive for cars with timing belt. The coolant, transmission oil and filter, and the brake fluid has to be changed. The air filter and spark plugs has to be replaced at this time too.
Most costly is the replacement of the timing belt. Volvo recommends for Volvo 240, changing the timing belt every 50,000 miles. Needless to say, they are pretty religious about this now.
The B20, B21, B23, and B230 engines are non-interference engines, meaning that the camshaft can be rotated independently of the crankshaft and no damage will result to the engine. That is, if the timing belt breaks, the valves will not hit the pistons; the engine will simply stop.
On the other hand, the B234 16-valve engines and any of the other Volvo multi valve engines are interference engines. Loss of the timing belt in these engines will result in severe or fatal engine damage.

I have a 1993 volvo 240 ran out of gas fuel pump and filter are less than 1 year old i put gas into it and it cranks and want to start but it doesn't. i put 6 gallons of gas any advice

It depends on how far you ran it out of fuel. If you ran it until it would not run any more and then tried to start it again several times; you may need to bleed and prime the fuel system to get it started. You start at the line coming from the tank and move toward the fuel injectors. You have to loosen a fitting and have someone pump fuel until the air bubbles stop and then tighten. A friend once worked for two hours to get his tractor started after his daughter ran it out of fuel. This is why they recommend that you do not run a fuel injected car out of fuel and if you do to turn it off as soon as it starts to miss badly.

No power to injectors on 1984 Volvo 240 DL New wiring harness

ok you must see what is missing. an injector requires 12volts to operate. the 12+ should be constant when key on and engine on or off,and the ground pulses. check both ways and see whats not there. if you have no pulse then ecm,cam sensor, or wiring faulty. is power+ is gone, then you have wiring trouble wich is the easier soulution. check and let us know

WILL NOT START ALL THE TIME

Had the exact same problem with my 240 wagon. There is a temperature sensor up near the manifold on the drivers side of the engine. This is not the temp sensor that feeds the dash gauge, but one that tells the engine control module whether you are starting hot or cold. Mine was cracked, so the engine computer would get a cold start signal even after the engine ran warm, and would flood. This can be a difficult problem to diagnose and an expensive one when mechanics start swapping parts. You cannot see this sensor, but you can feel it (when the block is cold, please) right under the exhaust manifiold. A replacement is about $80 plus labor. Even my very experienced Volvo mechanic overlooked it. But the car would start and run fine, then leave me stuck when I tried to restart it. After calling AAA for a tow, the temp sensor would reset, then the car would start normally. Cheers. The 240 is a great car - I ran mine up to 235,000 miles; now I have a 740 with the same engine.

1982 240 volvo

Hello,

Your engine does NOT have a carburator. Unless the engine was replaced by an earlier one, 1982 Volvo's were fuel injected.

This is an older fuel injection design that is a "constant flow" type system ie. there is a constant spray of fuel while the engine is running. Newer fuel injection systems, including Volvo, are "demand" type systems where fuel is only sprayed through the injectors when the engine electronics signal it to do so.

In any case, this older system is very sensitive to vacuum leaks. Check all your hoses for splits, hardening or connection looseness. Check the seals on each fuel injector (there are 4, one for each cylinder). If they are hard or cracked, replace them.

The later problem was the case on my 1981 240 which had the same problem. New fuels injector seals and the car runs perfect.

Good Luck,

Dr of Motors
