Question about 2003 Ford Escape

Is this shop taking advantage? Opinions please

My boyfriends truck has been in the repair shop for over a month now. Status went from good to bad quickly. First it just needed a tranny service. Then a transmission rebuild. A few days later 2 of 3 catalytic converters needed to be replaced. One of the converters took 3 weeks to come in. Now we are hearing that the 3rd one needs to be replaced as well as the EGR valve. The mechanic claim the biult up pressure blew a hole in the EGR valve and the car will not run. My question is can the car be taken somewhere else to repair (without a tow truck) and obviously with only a few details how likely is it that the shop is taking advantage of the situation? Price $2800 to 2900 for transmission, torque converter (new), and 1 cat converter plus the installation (they installed two) My boyfriend bought one--their source was going to be 3-4 more weeks. Our source got it there in two days. Please help!!

They only way to tell if this shop is taking advantage of you is to take it to another shop, however i recommend you get it towed on a flat bed just to cover your self in case this shop is horrible. I have never heard of all 3 catalytic converters failing on such a new vehicle. You would have to have engine issues that you ignored for a long time. Take it to another shop and have them inspect your catalytic converters and if this shop had taken advantage of you you can take them to small claims court to get your money back and i would report them to bar (bureau of automotive repair) if your in the united states.

If You Drove it In there then You should be Able to Drive it Away, Is Sounds as though what i Call "The SHOTGUN APPROACH" Meaning They Didnt Know Exactly what was Wrong with the EMISSIONS SYSTEM So they're Throwin More than 1 PART at a time at it to try and Fix it. TIME ? WOW As a Auto Service , you want your Customers to Come Back, Because of Fair Pricing,Good Trustworthy Service, and VERY TIMLY Service is Crucial to getting Return Customers. Sounds as if You ARE at the Wrong Shop, I Have 2 Brothers that Own Shops In Calif. 1 a Midas Muffler and 1 His Namesake and Time is there Concern The Faster They get Them Out & Fixed , the Faster to Get ANOTHER one in. The PART WAIT ALONE Is Grounds to Be Suspicious of them. Some CLEAN the Trans up Real good Anp Pass it off as Rebuilt. A Trained Eye Can Spot a FAKED PART. I Hope this Helps you Make the Right Choice with Respect to your Vehicle. RejakWilson

Sounds really odd. If the vehicle runs you can drive it any where you want to take it.

First have you gone to the shop and checked on the progress of your truck. Second if you can get it started I would take it to another machanic for a second look. If you can not get the truck started ask them if you can have someone else come in and look at it.

1993 nissan pick up won't start

Possibly a bad connection on the positive side coming from the battery or a weak ground. Check where the leads join the terminal clamps. Has the battery been verified as good? It doesn't take a lot of amps to run lights but it does to turn over the engine. Jump starting it does not require a fully charged battery.

1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo. Approx. 165480 mi. and well looked after. Took in for coolent leak (puddle under engine) and reservoir levels always low (duh). On 9/30/10 @ AAA shop told me they did...

I would contact the BBB about the AAA shop. They were taking advantage of you not to mention they did not warranty there work. Plus if they changed the pump they were the ones that left the clamp loose. In the future you should just take it to the shop you know and trust even if it cost you a little to have it towed there, it will be less than getting taken advantage of. It hard to find a good honest shop and it sounds like you have one so give them the business they deserve it.

1996 Subaru Legacy Outback with a head gasket leak

How can a new gasket cause increased compression? Who ever told you that is full of it and I would stop listening to anything they ever say.

Meanwhile, if the car is that good a condition all around, you just might go for it provided you have the services of a good knowledgeable, responsible mechanic. Can you get a another car in the same condition for the 1900 bucks? Do not think so.
And what does a radiator have to do with a head gasket? The repair is just labor intensive to replace a part that only costs a few bucks. But that price is way out of line. At 100 dollars labor for hour it is going to take a good mechanic 8 hours to disassemble and another 8 hours to reassemble the motor? Give me a break!!!!!!!!

Air Conditioning doesn't work, only blows warm air

Have your boyfriend check to make sure there is enough pressure using the refill kit you got. If your kit does not have a pressure guage, get one that does. Your A/C compressor will not kick in if the pressure it too low. If the pressure is good, then it could be a number of things.
  1. Low pressure sensor (need professional to replace)
  2. Bad A/C relay (located in fuse box in engine compartment. Can be swapped with another relay in the box to test)
  3. Bad A/C diode (located near A/C relay, need multimeter to test, of you can just replace)
  4. Bad A/C compressor (apply 12 volts directly to the device to see if it engages, if not, it's bad and needs professional to replace)
With A/C, there are so many variables, but this is a good start.

My transmission went out on my 2003 Sable.

Some repair shops give you a 90 day warranty because the parts they install have that warranty.

Try taking back you car if it has only been 2 months or 60 days. You can make a good argument because of the parts warranty.

My saturn 2001 stalls at stop lights when in idle

You can't afford to not take it to a Saturn dealer. Look at all the worry your going through not to mention possibly lost time from your job. I had the same problems with my 98 SL1. First time it went to the Saturn dealer they diagnosed a bad coolent tempurature sensor. The car was fine for about 2 months then it would start and then stall bfore I could get out of the driveway. This time the dealer diagnosed a bad crank position sensor. That was 3 years ago and the car has run well since. I believe your car could have one of these problems (maybe both). Take it to the dealer. They probably see Saturns with these problems every week and will know how to fix them.
