Question about 1995 Subaru Legacy

Catalytic converter is bad on 1995 Subaru Legacy L Wagon

My check engine light cannot be reset by the dealer. It is showing that my catalytic converter is bad. The first time this was diagnosed was over 80,000 miles ago. The check engine light has come on several times over the last 6-7 years, but has always been able to be reset. I have had no issues with my car and it is running well. I want to sell it though. Has anyone used a universal catalytic converter on a 1995 Subaru Legacy L wagon? Why is a catalytic converter replacement at the dealer over $1600, but I can get a catalytic converter from a parts store for $80? Is it that labor intensive to replace? Thanks

Dearship parts are can buy a factory catalytic converter or universal converter cheaper at auto parts place.they basic the same parts the.dealership has same catalytic converter.they put their price and labor rate charge an hour your pocket book will be empty.i have used universal catalytic converter.had no problem with it.the only difference is universal converter body a little shorter.but has same lengh as factory.if check engine is coming on you cant turn it off .if computer showing you a could have a misfire causing rich exhaust emission.that can ruin a catalytic converter have it scan.dealership charge you about $130.00 .you can have it scan at advance auto or auto see what pcm code could be oxygen sensor somethinh minor.

2001 Subaru Legacy 2.5L failed emissions BADLY in HC GPM 6.3 (1.2 Limit) & CO GPM 189.1 (15.0 Limit) NOx Good! NO check engine light. What do I check?

The first to-do item is read the ECU for any codes. An error does not always turn on the CE light.
6.3 HC means lots of hydrocarbons in the exhaust. This could be running rich so check the oxygen sensor(s). Also check the coolant temp sensor (symptom is hard starts, esspecially when cold. Is the air cleaner filter dirty? If you don't know when it was last replaced, replace it. A dirty filter causes rich mixture.
The catalytic converter could be burned out. This can happen if too much unburned HC gets into it.

A 2001 can be expected to have done 200,000+ km. Could be worn valve guides are letting too much oil into the cylinders. This also affects the catalytic converter. The fix is pull the heads off and have them refurbed.

Probably an oxygen sensor (there are 2 of..1 before the catalytic converter and 1 after)
Would need to pull error code from OBDII socket to know for sure though..

Flashing check engine light 1999 Subaru

Any time your check engine light is flashing this indicates an engine misfire that has the potential to damage your catalytic conveter. A diagnostic trouble code has been stored in the vehicles onboard computer that will confirm the engine misfire. Continued driving may ruin your very expensive catalytic converter located in your front exhaust pipe.
Good luck, I hope this answers your question.

Burning rubber smell from Subaru Legacy

Please have your exaust pipes checked, perhaps a mount is burning. The catalytic converter can make a nasty odor when it is clogged. Check the wear on the serpintine belt.

P0420 and check engine light

A p0420 code is set when the computer determines that the catalytic converter isn't doing it's job. In almost all instances that code can't set as a result of a bad o2 sensor so they probably didn't have to be replaced. The catalytic converter will need to be replaced, prefferably by an oem part. This can be pretty expensive and should be considered before purchasing the vehicle.

I have replaced a few bad converters on late model subarus in the past few years.
