There is no ignition and the fuel pump isn't working either - could it be an immobiliser? If so where is it!
SOURCE: 1985 Volvo 240 no fuel no spark
well first the fuel pump relay is bad, that is easily replaced. next you have no spark. the first thing you do is take the cap off the distributerand crank the engine. if it spins that tell syou thyat at least the tang or gear on the shaft of the distributor is ok and not broken. next thing is remove the #1 plug and use a 1/4 drive extension 6" long and turn the crank by hand until the #1 cylinder is top dead center(put the extension in the hole of head where the plug was and you should feel the top of the piston also make sure you can feel the top of the piston with half the extension this way you don't drop it in the cylinder with the piston at TDC(top dead center) the rotor of the distributor should be pointed at the #1 firing position. IF it does not that means your timing is off and you need to retime it by taking off timing cover and either replacing the belt/chain or gears. now if you do not have a distributor and you have a coil pack there could be only 2 things that won't give spark. either a bad coil or your altenater is bad(the battery is responsible for starting not running the vehicle like alot of people assume. the altenator energizes the coil which inturngives spark. hope this helps you please rate this thanks
SOURCE: Car stalling
Hi there i too have a 1994 Volvo 850 Turbo, i went through the same
awful, dangerous stalling problem if you have the same lights coming
up, oil, and what not then sudden loss of power, no engine rpm but
other electrics like radio work etc, i could never tell that i was
stalling because i always had the music on, but watch the Rpm's i also
had no power steering so i found out quick i was stalled, i would then
after a few minutes, 5 max be able to restart the car, it should very
likely be the fuel pump relay, its located where the fuses are on the
left side under a couple of torx screws, its a green most likely relay labeled 103, if its red it might have already been changed or newer,
i'm not sure what the colour difference does, but i replaced my relay
with a 103 red relay from a 1998, or 1999 Volvo s&0 same relay. I
found and researched that its a famous problem and can be many things
like cam shaft postilion sensor, vacuum leaks, fuel pump etc, but if
you can hear the pump on start up when the car is just ON it should be
fine, the relay after time becomes intermittent and switches on and off
as it pleases sometimes aggravated by turns and what not i think to due
the pump and gas slushing around? However, you have described the exact
problem my car had and the Volvo Experts couldn't figure it out, it
never stalled for them during roads tests or during a run in the shop,
always did for me, its the Fuel Pump Relay* available on ebay, for
cheap as pay no more than $60 Cdn, as i think a new one is around that
price.
A recommendation is to get the redish pinky one as it
worked for me, i know it is newer than the green 103 relay, let me know
if it works but it for sure changed things for me, no more scare of
ending up a road hazard or being embarrassed.

How many miles on the vehicle, and is this the first time the fuel pump will be replaced?

Hey Jruthesq
The 850 is equipped with an Idle Air Control Valve (IACV) which supplies the engine with air when idleing (a necessity since the main throttle body valve is completely closed when no throttle is applied, thus the engine would lack air without the IACV when idleing). The IACV is suspended in a rubber mount on the front of the throttle body itself, and is easily removed and inspected/cleaned. If it's dead a good cleaning usually gets it going again. Also make sure that the air from the IACV is unhindered on its way from the IACV to the throttle body (it's actually common for the holes in the throttle body to be gunked up so bad by hardened carbon deposits that one sometimes needs a nail or even a drill to open it up again).
Just thought I'd mention this since you said that the gas needs to be feathered for the engine to start. When you press down on the gas the main valve in the throttle body opens up, closing the IACV and supplying the engine with enough air.
Oh and if your fuel pump relay is a green one marked 103 you should replace it with the new and improved red one. The relay is located under the fuse box cover under the hood. Remove the 4 torx srews holding the cover in place and you'll see the relays under there.
Good luck mate!

It sounds like your cooling fans are not working.Need to check the cooling fan fuses, and the cooling fan relays. There is also a high side switch mounted somewhere on the high side of the ac system that cuts the fans on,or kicks them up on high speed when the ac system gets to high on the high side of the system. This switch may also cut the compressor off.I would check the fuses and relays for these fans first, this is more likely the problem. Is the car running normal temperature? If not the fans may not be running at all.Have them checked. The fan or fans may be bad them selfs. If I can be any more help, let me know.>>[email protected]
