What is the hose on the rear drum called it snapped at the drum and you can see wire on th end of the hose

I have a 23 t bucket and i cant get a brake pedal.when i bought it had very little brake so i replaced rear shoes and cylinders,front pads and calipers,all new lines and the master cylinder


Once you have bled the air from the brake lines,clamp off the front brake hoses carefully.Does the pedal feel better now?
Then the pad /caliper fit is allowing too much play.Is the pedal the same?Then clamp the rear hose and try the pedal.Is it fine with the rear hose clamped?If so we now know the problem is at the rear brakes.One common low pedal rear brake cause is brake shoes that do not fit the drums.Remove the drums and look at the shoes,are they showing contact wear fully or just in the middle of the shoe?Remove a shoe and place it in the drum.Can you rock the shoe against the drum surface?Once drums have been resurfaced,the shoes will not fit fully against the drum allowing the shoe the flex when applying pressure to it and this can easily create a low soft brake pedal. Of course rear brake adjustment must be correct once brake shoe contact is correct.To correct brake shoe contact,have your shoes re arc-ed to fit resurfaced drums or install new drums.Don't overlook brake master cyl /brake pedal push rod adjustment too.

How to remove rear brake drum


Follow the instruction

Chock the front wheels and put your safety glasses on.

Loosen the rear lug nuts with the lug wrench. Jack the rear end off the ground with the floor jack and place the jack stands under the rear frame. Lower the rear end onto the jack stands.

Remove the lug nuts and wheel by hand. Put the catch pan under the brake drum and spray brake clean inside the brake drum from the rear until the drippings are clear.

Loosen the brake shoe adjuster as far as possible with the brake shoe adjuster tool, which you can pick up at your local auto parts store.

Hit the face of the brake drum with the dead blow hammer just above the center of the drum's face. Rotate the drum a quarter turn and hit it again, just above the center of the drum's face. Repeat this twice more and then try to pull the drum off. If the drum does not come off, continue to hit it, rotate it and hit it again until you can pull the drum off the hub.

How do you remove the rear brake drums


  1. Remove the lug nuts and the wheel.
    1. One way to remove the drum is to tap the drum lightly with a mallet to free the drum if resistance is felt. Sometimes brake drums are stubborn. If the drum is difficult to remove, perform the following:
    1. Insert the end of a bent wire (a coat hanger will do nicely) through the hole in the brake drum and hold the automatic adjusting lever away from the adjuster.
    2. Reduce the brake shoe adjustment by turning the adjuster bolt with a brake adjuster tool. The drum should now be loose enough to remove without much effort.

      The Brake Adjustment can be access on Rear of the BackPlate !

    Parking Brake


    With the parking brake released go under the car and trace the parking brake cable s all the way the the rear brakes. If no problem is found jack the rear of the car up and remove the rear wheels. Remove the brake drums (you might have to insert a brake tool or screwdriver and loosten the adjustment in order to get the drums off. Inspect both brake systems for problems. If you drove through water on your last trip and the car was parked for several days the rear shoes sometimes get stuck to the drums because of rust. Water on the shoes can also cause the automatic adjustors to over tighten the shoes and adjusting the tension with the brake tool or screwdriver will correct it. Most of the time the adjustment slot is on the backplate at the bottom and has a small rectangular rubber plug you have to remove to make the adjustment. Some of the newer vehicles have the adjustment on the front of the drum and is a round hole which must be near the top to reach the adjustor.

    Cant get them off the van. is there a snap-ring? rear brake drums


    sometimes there a clip over the stud were the lug nut goes you would see it once the wheel is off, try hitting drum with a hammer in front to break free, if drum is loose but wont come all the way off then you will have to unadjust the brake adjuster ,its done through a window on the rear of the backing plate ( backside of were the drum is,) hope this helps.

    Hot to tell if my brake drums are going bad on rear tires


    Going bad as in are they warped?? **Remember, safety first.....** If you have a working parking brake the easy way someone might check is to get going at a decent speed, clear of any traffic or obsticles and press down on the parking brake while ready at the release handle. If you feel the shake, it's probably warped rear drums

    No brake fluid flow to right rear brake


    the stratus is know for clasped rear brake hoses .This stops the flow off brake fluid. try opening the brake lines at the master cylinder that go to the rear.pump up brakes first! if you got fluid than check the brake line if this is rear disc brakes on the line at the rear will be a built in proportioning valve.if drum loosen rubber hose line before the rubber part to see if you have fluid. If you do replace the brake hose! On you 74 challenger by the way i love dodge! any way on the valve there is a small button on the front of the proportioning valve that pops out it needs to be tap in lightly. also hit the brake peddel kind of hard a couple off times if that doesn't work. thanks for your question


    p.s that hex bar on the is a junction not a proportioning valve .

    Rear Brake Inspection


    Only if the drums are over-sized would they need replaced. This means if the drums cannot be turned. There should be a maxium diameter stamped on the drum. You will need a drum mike to measure. I have not heard of this before unless it is a safety re-call in which you would not have to pay.

    REAR BRAKE DRUM WON,T COME OFF


    I just had a similar problem with 1997 Hardbody.

    Cause: The E-brake cable was binding up inside the drum causing the e-brake not to disengage - despite the handle being released inside the cab.

    Solution: Look for 2 threaded holes in the drum. Insert two bolts and crank these bolts in. They will eventually work to push the drum off the wheel. Be careful to go slow and evenly (don't snap off the bolts!). Penetrating oil and mallet will help the process.
