Transmission stuck in higher gears on highway/fluid fill level

The 1998 Chevy Malibu does not have a transmission dipstick. Instead there is a check plug located on the transaxle, near the pan, adjacent to the engine oil drain plug.

Note: the vehicle must be kept level when checking the transmission fluid level.

Place an oil container under the check plug and remove it. Observe the fluid as it drips into the pan, indicating correct fluid level. The fluid level should be at the bottom of the check hole. Double check to make sure the car is level. If no fluid drips from the check hole, some fluid should be added via the red cap. But add only a little at a time until the fluid is at the bottom of the check hole.

How much transmission fluid does a 2002 chevy malibu hold, how do i measure it and is there a warning indicator if it is low

if your looking for a dip stick, there isn't one , here's what you do for a 2001, there is a red fill cap on the transmission bell housing under the brake master cylinder. You'll have to look real hard to see it. There is also a bolt on the passenger side of the transmission that you remove to check the level. The transmission must be warm and the engine running. You add fluid until it runs out of that hole. I believe its the same through 2005

I WANT TO CHANGE MY TRANSMISSION FILTER ON MY 2003 CHEVY MALIBU. hOW MUCH FLUID WILL i NEED ?

  • When you change a transmission filter the general rule is you loos roughly 1/4 - 1/3 of your total transmission fluid capacity.
  • I would buy 3 quarts and dump two in the transmission after the filter/gasket change. Put your foot on the brake and go through the gears to fill the pockets in the transmission up. Then put then check the fluid and add some more as necessary. Should be around 2 1/2 quarts total you will loose in the filter change.

  • Hope this helps and thank you for using FixYa.

Regards, Tony

1998 chevy malibu cant find dip stick to check transmission fluid

Many of the GM front wheel drive transaxels of that period didn't have a dipstick but relied on filling the fluid with the proper amount for a empty condition, the thought pattern was that if the transaxel was low it had to be drained and repaired then refilled.

I found the transmission fill cap on my friend's 1998 Chevy Malibu, but where is the dip stick to check the fluid level located?

There is no dip stick. There is a 7/16 check plug just under the passenger side axle. The transmission must be warm and the engine idling in park to check. This tough to do without a lift.Fluid will drip out of hole when full.

The 1997 Chevy Malibu does not have a dipstick for the transmissi

Your gonna have to get under the car and find the bolt thats on the transmission on the driver side take it out while car is running and if any fluid comes out like a trickle its full. If not I believe to fill look under the hood and should have a red cap I believe the cap is somewhere under the brake master cylinder

99 Chevy Malibu - auto trans - no dipstick

You have what is called a closed cased transmission. You have to crawl underneathe to get to the tranny and remove the upper bolt close to the side of the case (more towards the bottom of the transmission). When you fill it, you fill it till it starts to drip out of that hole.

Looking for a picture for you.
