SOURCE: 1988 Wrangler Ignition Switch Removal

There are four (sometimes two) bolts that hold the steering column to the dash. remove them & column will come down to let you get in there.
follow instruction sheet with switch. if you don't get it centered correctly it wont work correctly.

SOURCE: 2000 jeep wrangler will not start from the key

It sounds like you have a bad neutral safety switch or your linkage is worn enough that it's not registering properly.

Starting a 1988 Jeep Wrangler without the keys

this is called hot wiring(as seen on TV?)
is this just one time, or forever hot wired, (a key question)
if forever we need to buy 2 switches, if TV way, ask.

AMC 2.5L or 4.2L engine? (radicall diffr. fueling and spark)!!!
manual transmission? or the A999 automatic box.??????
its super easy. there IMMO bs in 1988 !
just 2 wires.
first wire cranks the engine the Key start line.
the other powers up the ignition & EFI. called ignition
if you have a schematic of that system this is 10x more easy.
the free books only go back to 1993
this car is the early YJ jeep.
the automatic and clutch , cars both cut the key line
if the clutch or trans is not in park. so..... cant help there
lacking key facts of car (drive line facts)
ill pretend its a 4.2L with BA-10 box, stick.
here ill log in to alldata.com, (FSM like data, that scares many)
i owned 2 , 1988 jeeps and one 1996 and 2002 and 2008.
so have vast data on them.
4.2L guess.
i made you a drawing from orig. horsed up. for you.
say doing stump pulling duty in the back 40.
qty 2 , 15amp switches.
wired like this, the MOM means momentary
seen below. ask questions if not clear....

1988 wrangler startup squeel and rough start

Sounds like you have a loose fan belt. May or not be related to the rough start though. Tighten (and, ideally replace) the fan belt.

1988 Jeep Wrangler starting problems. I replaced the ignition module, spark plug wires, coil, distributor module, and my jeep will not start. It gets fuel, turns over, but still not starting. It is a 1988...

you are saying it is getting spark, and fuel, right? If it is getting spark, and fuel in to the throttle body, check compression-make sure the Mass Air Flow sensor is plugged in, and double check your spark-you say you replaced all those ignition items, but do not say that you have spark.

when you do that you are bypassing the starter relay witch is on the fender well under the hood about 1.5 inch round and 2 inches long assuming you have all the wires hooked up to the starter double check work and then find the relay and jump it and see if it starts if so your done if not check wires for crossion or a break in the positive wire or wires some where good luck

1988 jeep wrangle

Check your spark plugs. Without good spark plugs the ignition won't ignite. Just go look for Jeep spark plugs at like AutoZone and they are real cheap. To change them you will need a long socket wrench to twist them out and change each one.
