1998,940 turbo,sometimes refuses to start occationally cuts out
Having above problems, took car to dealer. Replaces cranck senson, fuel filter, air filter, rotor, spark plugs, battery and wires. Erros codes once said fault in wiring from controlbox to ignition, But no faults were measurable or visible. Shop are at thier wits end. When it ruses to start, it will start like nothing is wrong after minutes. Same when it stalls during driving, restartable after some time, like nothing is wrong. Took spark plugs out and they were almost white - but no explanation for the lean micture. Can it be a weak fuel pump, and is it possible to test pump pressure and flow. The non starting issue shows up maybe 3 times in a day, and not the following 2 weeks !! Cutting out is maybe twice a month. For more thatn 3-4 months now and no change/development

Hello, you can try resetting the ECU. Disconnect the battery, or remove fuse #6 from the fuse box under the hood. Wait a minute before you re-install (or reconnect) it.
Had the same thing happen 2 years ago when it started 80 miles from home when i took off from a red light it didnt want to go pouring white raw fuel smoke i bet it took 5 miles to get up to a speed where i wasnt getting run over we finally got it home and it was the bearings gone in the turbo.
I would say that having checked the fuel and air filters that theres a stong possibillity the turbos not kicking in, dont forget an x5 is a big lump and without a turbo the result would be as you describe. regards KSK
the starting problem has nothing to do with a new exhaust system being fitted,, it could be the car alarm cutting off the fule pump though,,, try reseting the alarm it may have been upset by the work done on the exhaust,,,
In my opinion cut off problem occurs if engine is not getting sufficient fuel and/or air. Clean the air filter, turbo filter and fuel filter. Check the continuity of diesel flow from filter to hdi pump. If you haven't found any problem there then the possibily the hdi pump and injectors section needs to be checked. If the car has done more than 100000 miles then clean inlet and outlet manifolds including check of turbo and EGR valve. Do everything whatever possible before you take your car to garage. If there is no luck then let your car diagnosed and check any error code recorded by ecu.
I had a turbo renault , I cranked the wastegate down to increase boost and had same problem.
There was a sensor that cut the ignition if the turbo was over pressuring. Was a pretty violent jerking, felt like it was tearing the engine mounts out.
oxygen senson alternator throttle body fuel air mix housing u will find this connected off the air filter assembly fuel filters improperly installed or clogged 3 of them one in engine compartment one on chassis by gas tank and one in the tank called the sending unit this has a filter on it bad ignition coil bad battery bad computer settings
