Question about 1993 Jeep Grand Cherokee

2 Answers

I am having several problems with my 93 Grand Cherokee Laredo 4 wheel all the time. First, every time I drive, it seems like it slips out of 4 wheel drive high into neutral, then we have to come to a stop put the regular shifter into neutral then put the gear for all wheel drive back into gear. Do we need a new transfer case? second problem we are having: my computerized panel that tells you when something needs filled, only comes on sometime and when it does stay on it lights up a section near the window part and stays on. It tells us that the washer fluid is low we check and it is full. third problem we are having, my instrument cluster panel where the odometer is, keeps blowing fuses. Can anyone please help me?

On your first problem, I would say the transfer case is gonna need some work if not totally rebuilt. You may try checking the fluid in the transfer case to start with. If it is low, the transfer case could be overheating and causing it to jump out of gear. I would say the damage is already done though. On your second problem, check the sensor in your washer fluid resevior, it has probably gone bad. As for the display not working all the time it is probably going out. The driver information display on the grand cherokees is notoriuos for going bad as they age. After 16 years it is probably going to need to be replaced and they are not cheap. Try a salvage or junk yard first. I also have a 93 Grand Cherokee and I have had to replace the instrument cluster. My speedometer stopped working and then the cluster began blowing the fuse over and over. I went to a salvage yard and found one for 25 bucks. Unfortunately, there are no easy solutions to the problems your are having. Good luck to ya. Hopefully you get everything situated. Jeeps are great vehicles to own and they will stand the test of time with the proper maintenance and and a little TLC.

the first grand cherokee laredo was in 1992 . it was all jeep sports back then, the blocks are all the same .you will need to use some of the sensors from the old motor, the distributor and oil sending unit and temp sensor. will be no problem. if I can put a ford ranger motor in a mercury sable your swap is easier

How should the full-time and part-time 4 wheel drive be used on a 2003 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo?

Hi

Full time 4 wheel drive should be used on rugged and difficult to drive on terrain, this could include adverse weather such as deep snow, mudslides, sand dunes etc.

Part time would be used on terrain that is irregular where some parts of a track may be road and other parts rocky, mountainous regions combined with any of the above weather conditions. The 4 wheel drive should not be used for normal driving as it will only over time damage the gearbox, the 4 wheel system is not designed for speed but purely for grip and stability.

Hope this helps
Regards
Dan

I have a 93 jeep grand cherokee laredo it has 4all time neutral and 4lo should i keep it in 4all time all the time or does that ruin it

Yes, Your Jeep is what is known as a Quadra-Trac. This type of cherokee is an all wheel drive model. 4 wheel all time is for everyday driving, Neutral completely dissconects the drive train from the transmission and will not move at all. 4 wheel low is more for off road conditions where traction is compromised. 4 wheel low should NEVER be used at speed above 15 miles an hour.

To the guy above: 4 wheel drive is designed for low end pulling power and safer handling on slippery road conditions. 4 wheel drive has NOTHING to do with how fast you go or how fast you stop. Don't post a comment if you clearly don't know the correct information.

My 93 jeep grand cherokee service 4wd switch is on. what does this mean ?

Hey there, The driver info center in the 93 grand cherokee's is notorious for this message. This switch is on the transfer case and its only purpose is to tell that display what 4 wheel drive mode you are in (eg. 2 wheel, 4 wheel high, 4 wheel low, etc.) This can mean the switch bad but is USUALLY cause by a short in the display module itself. This will not affect anything on your Jeep. It is merely for driver information only. This is a very common problem and if you have a 93 in which the display is working at all your are lucky. They are very bad about going completely out over time.

93' Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo brakes while steering

If the diff is really low it may be overheating and binding but it would have to be really low or have a mechanical problem to begin with.
Tires can cause binding because different manufacturers tires with the same #s have a different diameter (I know they should all be the same but they are not). This should cause problems if you have all wheel drive or are using 4 wheel drive (both ends of vehicle will be trying to go different speeds...Same holds true for different ratio diffs)If you have little experience with this stuff have someone go over it for you, It will cost less than blowing up the transfer case or something!!!

All wheel drive v8 issues 96 Jeep Grnd Cherokee Ltd

Any all wheel drive will give less fuel miles.(compared to ones you engage as needed) The Chrysler v8 is a time proven engine, pretty much a copycat of a chevy with some changes to make it their own. Overall, I haven't heard any really bad stuff about them. If you look at the problems on this site, there seem to be fewer jeep probs than all other vehicles. (even though some problems are really weird!!!)
What you really need to see is the vehicles history to make sure it's been maintained and has not been back to a shop for the same thing over and over.
Good luck!

Service 4 Wheel Drive Switch

this seems to be because either the connection to the solenoid is loose or faulty or the solenoid is not activating. the transmission control module sends a signal to the solenoid to activate it. you get the light because the ecm detected that there is a a problem with the circuit. this is due to the fact that there is a voltage value to the solenoid and it is out of operating parameters
