Question about 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee
A year ago the interior lights of my 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee Lardeo I6 would just randomly turn on and off while driving and then they just eventually started to stay on so we removed the fuse. But today i put it back in to see if it was the back door sensor and they are now turning off but not in a min or two but more like 5 to 10 minutes and I was curious what the problem could be since it seemed to go through a certain phase?
Interesting (and doubtless very vexing) trouble...
I always recommend that an OWNER beg, borrow or BUY
the FACTORY+WORKSHOP+REPAIR manual..
but as that is not always an option...
I like to point out where FREE wiring diagrams and
TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETINS (TSBs) can
be accessed (on BBB Industries website (registration
is required... as these are real documents))... for popular
USA Market vehicles.

I noticed the Manual switch (dash) was assumed to be the trouble... out of curiosity I tried looking up your switch...
Please note: while totally UN-SCIENTIFIC.. when I find
multiple BRANDS of a particular switch STILL (plentifully) available ...
I CONSIDER I have FOUND A PROBLEMATIC area ...
GUESS WHAT... Your switch is WIDELY AVAILABLE in large numbers (quite popular (a huge clue)..
Check them out: ROCKAUTO (examples)

Notwithstanding that screaming clue...
Each door and the TAIL-GATE also have contacts
which can jointly or singularly contribute to the problem.
Putting some body sealant (or play-dough) on the tip of each plunger... ( I would simply remove THEM and TAPE OFF the
connectors to TROUBLE-SHOOT)...
Again: hugely popular parts

Actually... including the courtesy timer module... this is a fairly complex circuit to trouble-shoot...
I hope I am helping.
I like electronics, circuitry (etc.)... Please feel free to comment
me or EVERY "FIXER" for more depth... & HAPPY HUNTING.

The usual culprits of this issue are the liftgate switch or the flipper glass switch. very common issue on that style jeep. what happens is over time the metal holding that switch together weakens and the switch begins to come apart. if you have a bad one sometimes you can push it back together and recrimp it somewhat. im sure it is not a cheap part from jeep. check em out and see if thats your issue. on my old one i replaced the headlight switch and the interior light relay before i found the real culprit!! you might even find a youtube vid on this very subject. good luck

The drivers power window switch is also a computer. I have found a broken wire in the pass through loom between the drivers door and body.

check your light dimmer & see if you have it set all the way down.If it's anything like my 99WJ it has an off setting when the dimmer is set all the down causing the interior lights to not come on when you open the doors, hope this helps
