It may also be the catalytic converter. If that gets plugged up it puts a lot of back pressure on the motor. This will make it hard to get up to speed. When not pressing much on the petal it will seem to run fine. Then when you press more to increase speed you will feel it.
you idle air control could be going out,this is a electric valve that controls your idle speed,it is not that hard to replace,just a couple screws and a electric connection plug..check around at the auto parts store and get a good price...this part should cost about $35-70 so check around because it is elecrtical it is not a returnable part. The part is located on your air intake just past your throttle plate.it is usually very easy to get to. Take you about 5 min. to replace it youself. Your car is at the right age for this part to be going out. I would change it out if i were you. As far as when you push on the gas that could be caused by your thottle position sensor,also a part that will be going out soon,it acts like a accelerator pump, which could be causing you sputtering when you push on ths gas petal..I would look at replacing both these parts,they are easy to replace and will keep you from getting stranded and at the mercy of some of the Auto Mechanic Ripoffs.......
Similar thing happened to me, but it ended up being a clutch on its last legs....Since you have an automatic, I'd guess its your Mass Air Flow sensor or throttlr body.
Try checking the snorkel tube between the air cleaner and the intake. Open the hood, and have a friend try to rev the engine, and watch the tube...my '92's was collapsing and starving the engine, couldn't get more than 3500-4000 rpm. Could also be a fuel pump problem like low pressure or bad line.
