There are a number of things that contribute to oil pressure, the pump has very little to do with pressure. I will say I have seen a lot of issues with the pick up screen inside the oil pan becoming clogged. I would suggest hooking up a manual gauge to verify actual oil pressure, then if it is actually low I would remove the oil pan and check the pick up screen first. You're looking at 11-12 hours labor at a repair shop plus 100-150 for the pump if you want it replaced. Plus gaskets and oil.

SOURCE: '97 Dodge Dakota 5.2l oil pressure problems

On the 318 (5.2 liter) V-8 that was in my 1973 Dodge Dart Sport, I started having oil pressure problems with valve ticking and clunking around the crankshaft around 173,000 miles. Prior to the problem, I had bought a couple cases of Pennzoil on sale. Needless to say, when I finally dropped the pan, the sludge had baked to a ceramic-like texture. I soaked the pick up screen in solvent to disolve the crud, replaced the oil pump, and replaced the main and rod bearings with undersized bearings (.001" undersized). The oil pressure went up to normal, the valve tick went away, and the clunking on the bottom end went away. The engine felt as tight like new, and should have lasted for another 150,000+ miles if the nitwit I sold it to hadn't wrapped it around a light pole. By the way, don't ever use no-name, Pennzoil or Quaker State motor oil. The minimal savings will cost you in the long run.

97 sonoma only runs on starter fluid

if it ran fine before this happened then check the fuel pump relay first. it may have shorted out when jumped off, or when battery was replaced

1997 GMC Sonoma with 4 cyl engine. The truck runs great, but after the engine warms up, the oil pressure drops to around 12 from 50 when cold. is this the oil pump and how do i change?

Depending on oil type (IE: synthetic, etc) this is normal. If using conventional oil then I'd be concerned. To replace oil pump you'll need to remove pan and it is bolted to lower part of engine.

My 2002 gmc sonoma (extended cab sls) will not start i have changed plugs and wires fuel pump and fuel filter i have done oil change and air filter change. the truck will fire if i give it a spray off...

My engine light in my 2002 GMC Sonoma has been on for the past four weeks. Yesterday I had an oil change done on my truck with a local mechanic. He turned the engine light off, but it came on soon after leaving his shop.
This morning I went to start my truck and there was NO power whatsoever. After repeatedly turning the key, I soon saw a slight movement on the battery display, but no lights would come on. It just seemed like it wasn't getting any power. I changed the battery two years ago, so it should be fine.
Eventually, the truck received full power and started, more less out of no where. It wouldn't hold an idle and would just die if i took my foot off the gas.
Hopefully someone has a solution for me.
Thanks.

Have a 98 gmc sonoma. Clutch does not have much pull but yet does not slip. I cannot get the clutch and gas timing right because the truck boggs down a bit comming out of 1st

either its time for a clutch job or you have a hydrolic slave cylinder issue. the fluid could be real low, you could have air in the system.

Driveing and truck stoped running,,replaced fuelpump and filter,,got a bad pump and replaced it again,,truck would still not start so I checked spark,,,had a bad cap due to ear on desterbitor...

check to see if you're getting spark from coil into distrubitor. if you replaced al those, the only thing i can think is it's the coil.

The heater still won't work after I changed the thermostat on my

Get a female garden hose adapter from the local hardware store. Disconnect the heater hose from behind the fan pulley and attach the hose connection. Disconnect the other heater hose behind the alternator, aim it towards the ground and flush water through the heater core. This worked on my truck.
