The timing marks are on the crank pulley. set at 15 degrees.

timing belt marks are on the edge of the belt and the pulleys (3).

Remove your #1 cylinder spark plug, and bring the piston to the top. Use a straw, or a screwdriver to see when the piston is on top. Place your distributor so the the rotor will point to the number one cylinder (you may have to move the oil pump drive shaft with a screwdriver). From there, you should get the engine to fire, then time it from there.

I have used the Haynes Repair Manual for the Mercury Villager to change the timing belt on my 1993 Villager, twice. I just finished last night with the latest change. I found the Haynes manual to be very useful. This is just an overview:
1. Jack up the the van and support it on jack stands. Remove the front passenger side wheel and 2 plastic splash sheilds.
2. Remove the two radiator hoses on the passenger side of the engine.
3. Remove the pulley from the water pump (4x 10mm bolts)
4. Remove the tensioner pulley, including the bracket, for the A/C compressor. (3x 12 mm bolts)
This one can be difficult because it requires a torx head to loosen the pulley and it's a very tight fit to get a torx in there. I ended up taking the torx head out of the socket then turning it with a 10mm wrench.
5. Remove all 3 drive belts.
6. Remove the crankshaft pulley. (1-1/16" bolt) You will need a good strap wrench to keep the pulley from turning or an impact to remove this bolt. You may be able to remove the pulley just by bumping it with a mallet, but you may need a gear puller.
7. Remove the timing belt cover, it has an upper and lower half and is held in place by several 8mm screws.
8. You will find that the timing belt pulleys on the both cam shafts and the crank shaft have a white paint mark on one tooth. Make sure the marks on the two cam shaft pulleys are in line with a "bump" mark on the back plate of the belt cover. The bump mark for the front cam is located at about the 2 o'clock position and the one for the rear cam is at about the 10 o'clock position. You will need a mirror and flashlight to see this one.
The crankshaft pulley mark lines up with a notch in the oil pan (I think it's the oil pan where the notch is, but you will see it at near the 6 o'clock postion.
9. My new timing belt was a DAYCO and it came with a good instruction sheet. The new belt has an arrow that should point AWAY from the engine. There are also 3 lines on the new belt that will line up with the lines on the timing belt pulleys.
10. The belt tension should be adjusted so that you get about 0.5" - 0.6" of deflection at the center between the two cam shafts.
Note: I recommend replacing both the tensioning pulley and water pump while you are in there.
A water pump is about $32 and the tensioning pulley is about $35 but it's money well spent.
I did NOT replace the tensioner pulley the last time I changed the timing belt, and that is what failed this time. I could have saved myself a lot of work if I had replaced the pulley the first time.

Hope this helps. I'd still buy the HAYNES manual.

I do not think you have anything to worry about, I have replaced timing belts on villagers for years and have yet to see any engine damage. The 3.3 eng. is a free wheeling engine. Hope this helps out.

  1. Align marks on camshaft pulleys with alignment marks on seal plate.
  2. Install timing belt. NOTE: No looseness should exist on the tension side and at the camshaft pulleys.
  3. Loosen tensioner lock bolt.
  4. Turn crankshaft 2 revolutions in direction of rotation and check that timing marks are still in alignment.
  5. Tighten timing belt tension lock bolt to 27-38 ft lb (32-52 Nm).
  6. Apply a force of 22 lbs to timing belt between camshaft sprockets.
  7. Belt deflection should measure 0.30-0.33 in (7.5-8.5 mm)
  8. NOTE: Replace tensioner spring if timing belt deflection is excessive.

  1. Install lower timing belt cover.
  2. Install upper timing belt cover.
  3. Install power steering drive belt and adjust belt tension.
  4. Install fan pulley.
  5. Install generator drive belt and adjust belt tension.
  6. Install A/C drive belt and adjust belt tension.
  7. Install splash guard.
  8. Install fan and fan shroud.
  9. Install 4 fan bolts. Tighten to 24 ft lb (33 Nm).
  10. Install fan shroud mounting bolts.
  11. Install fresh air duct.
  12. Connect hose to resonance chamber.
  13. Connect battery negative cable.

Timming belt


Remove distributor cap, crack engine. if rotor does not turn, the timing belt is boken. 105,000 maintenance interval.
If rotor does turn, it is likely the distributor. Repalce with Rich Porter NS 60 for $115 on eBay or Amazon. 1999 noted for this issue.

How to time dodge 5.9 motor. it wants to fire but will not. the marks of the harmonic balencer vs. where the distributor button goes


when you install the distributor the rotor button should point at the # 1 plug wire on the distributor cap make sure you are on the compression stroke of the motor when doing this you can verify that you are on the compression stroke by removing the #1 spark plug and turning the engine over while holding your fingure over the spark plug hole it will push your finger off the hole you need to spin the engine .spin the engine over slow while doing this so you don,t pass the timing mark on the harmonic balancer.

Cam/Crank Sensor correlation problem


Thr problem should be the static timing for the distributor, and this is how it should be set;

There is a mark or notch on the distributor housing that the rotor should be pointing to when the engine is on top dead center. This static timing is all that matters and the computer will be able to control the timing as long as the ignition rotor is in that position when the engine is at top dead center.

1. Place the engine at top dead center.

2. Look under the distributor cap and find where the number one terminal runs under the distributor cap, and where that position on the distributor cap corresponds with the distributor housing, and it should match up to a mark or a notch on the distributor housing.

3. With the engine on top dead center the ignition rotor should be pointing to the mark or notch that is on the distributor housing, if it is not then loosen up the distributor and turn the distributor until the ignition rotor is pointing to the mark or notch on the distributor housing, the engine should now be static timed.

After setting timeing marks on timeing belt. were is the rotorbuttion suppost to point. is there a mark for that.


The rotor should be pointing at the No. 1 plug wire on the compression stoke. Thats as to say, turn the engine over by hand or wrench until you fill compressing from the #1 cyl. by holding your finger on it while manually rotating the engine. ( may need asst) When you feel the compression that means your coming up on TDC ( top dead center) of the compression stoke. Now turning the engine the same direction align the timing marks on the harmonic bal. to TDC 0 degree's. Lift off the distributer cap and the rotor should be pointing at the wire that goes to the number 1 plug. 96ac440.png

How do i put my timing belt on my 1999 suzuki swift i have tried to line it up and i cant get it help me!!!


with the belt off; turn the crankshaft to #1 piston top-dead-center. Next turn the camshaft until both valves on the #1 piston are closed; then: check the distributor to see that the rotor is pointing to #1 spark plug wire.(if not go around again until the rotor points at the #1 wire.) If you are correct you will now see the timing marks on the cam and, the crank pulleys.
line up the mark on the belt to the marks on the pulleys and, slip the belt on; then tighten the belt.

Rigoe the points for the timing belt are usually located on the sprokets in conection with marks or dots on the engine block some where around the sprockets that hold the timing belt. Remenber to bring the piston number one to TDC (top dead center), this means you have to locate the piston number one, take the spark plug out and turn the cranshaft (the one with the pulley) by hand until the piston is all the way up. On the distributor the rotor should point to the spark-plug wire number one (you can make a mark outside of the distributor cap where the number one spark-plug wire is pointing so when you take the cap off you can see if the rotor is pointing the same direction). With the timing belt cover off you are going to be able to aling all this points at the exact locacation all together. So we have: Piston number one at TDC, The rotor(enside the distributor cap) pointing to the number one spark-plug wire, and the mark of the sprockets pointing the marks of the engine block( litle dot or dash). If you get all this right you are have done a good job and ready to make a trip you can get all this just by turning the cranshaft by hand with a rachet and a big socket. God bless you.
