That voltage is really high sounds like you may of gotten a defective alternator. I would see if the place you got the alternator from is able to test it. I would avoid driving it until you get it figured out if your alternator is putting out that voltage it could damage the battery or other electrical components.
No,it will blow up your battery.
It may hurt the electronics/computers in the truck. 15.5 volts is the safe max on computer systems.
SOURCE: alternator overcharging
ok, there is an earth wire between the engine and the body (usually bolted to the exhaust manifold), you need to undo it from the body, and with a piece of sandpaper or a file, you need to clear away the paint from under where the wire connects to the body, (might be a bad earth giving a faulty sensor reading, because on the production line the body is painted before anything else is fitted), clean the end of the earth wire contact and re-connect.
if you still have the same problem, you need to see an auto electrician or your nearest dealer.
SOURCE: Alternator may be overcharging?
Well, 18 volts is an issue. And can cook your battery. Proper voltage range is 13.6 to 14.2 volts
The lower the voltage, the higher the amperage so 18 volts is doing nothing as far as charging but is doing alot towards ruining the battery. Have both checked. The battery could have wasted the alternator. good luck. I bet your battery needs lots of water. If so, it may already be trash.

The "Charging Sytem" includes the battery, the alternator, the voltage regulator and all related connecting wires and cables. If the charging system was tested and it tested "good" then all of these components are working properly.
If your charging system is good and you continue to have a dead battery, then you probably have an "Ignition-Off draw". This means that something is staying on after the ignition is shut off. This could be interior lamps not shutting off due to a bad door switch, or the headlamps being left on, or some other electrical component in the vehicle that is malfunctioning. If this is the case, then you need to have your vehicle checked by a competent Service Technician who, using the proper equipment and techniques, can locate and repair the source of the problem.
