Question about 1988 Lincoln Town Car

1988 Lincoln town car: starter will not engage when attempting to start the car. I crossed over the two posts on the solenoid and the car started as normal. Replaced the solenoid. Did not solve the problem..thinking now it is the relay but can't find it. Can someone help? Thanks.

I don't believe there is a relay. Is the shift lever in park or neutral? Have you tried jiggling the shift lever? Check to see if you are getting power from one of the wires that go to the small terminals on the solenoid when the key is turned to start. If not, I suspect the neutral safety switch or the key switch.

Alittle vague about the 2-posts....both LARGE ones or the large one and smaller one.....here is something you may check since you said jumping the solenoid started the car....with help have someone turn the KEY to start...with a continuity light check the SMALL terminal at the solenoid...it should have voltage...if not it's you IGNITION SW.. or wiring....hope this helps you..GL

The starter relay is on the fender, fight side of car, 10" or so from the battery.

Starter motor not engaging

Hi without seeing (hearing) it sounds like the clutch in the bendix is faulty, as the solenoid will engage the bendix at the same time as connecting feed to the starter motor.
New starter required or a good strip down and rebuild on the solenoid and bendix.
What condition is the ring gear in by the way (Starter Motor removed). David

Car will not start

Sounds like either the starter motor has jammed or your battery is down on power so unable to engage the starter motor solenoid. Cures: 1.Hit starter motor with hammer using short sharp shocks - this often frees the stuck starter motor engaging cog. 2.Put car in gear and attempt to rock the car back and forth. 3. Jump start using stronger battery. 4.Charge battery - you might want to check that your alternator is charging the battery, the easiest way is to use a multimeter on the 0-20volt DC scale and see that the voltage is higher than the battery in a non running state. You should see a reading of around 13-14 volts. Obviously you will need the motor running to check this.Lastly if possible try bump starting.

The bendix in the starter isn't working as it should. The bendix pushes the gear up or out to engage with the flywheel, but the starter gear isn't fully engaging or going back in the down position completely. The starter is most likely your problem. The starter is good, but the bendix inside isn't.

the starter solenoid is not receiving voltage. It must click to engage the drive and also to turn the starter. Check the fusable link which is inline embedded in the solenoid wire a inch away from it. "that may have melted down inside". To check pust pull on the solenoid wire hard and it will snap apart if melted inside

Car won't start battery good won't crank 98 lincoln

you need to find the starter solenoid and jump the two largest posrs with booster cables .if it canks repace the starter.if all your hearing now is a clicking sound you need to jump power to the solenoids start wire,a push on wire on the smaller post of the solenoid ,if it cranks replace the solenoid.if neither makes it crank, repair the grounrd cable or remove the starter and remove the rust from the nose cone and the mounting point.

take a test light and check the small wire that for the ignition switch, is there power going to the solinoid? if so then need to have someone start it and test to see if there power for sol to starter. if so then starter is at fault or just take a jumper from batter to starter and see if it works. if so then sol may be your issuel

Bendix wont engage flywheel

if its clicking then the solenoid is going. try doing a starter draw test. hook a meter to the battery on dc volts. attempt to star. if voltage drops below 9 volts the its the starter. if it doesnt move much at all then its the solenoid. but i think its the starter cause the solenoid is clicking
